My 95 Ranger acted like it ran out of gas. I added a couple gallons and it started and ran until I turned it off, but now it will not start again. When I took the fuel filter off and turned it over no gas came out of the line. The fuel pump is in the tank (I think). How can I be sure it is the fuel pump and how hard it it to change? Thanks in advance.
Turn the key to run but do not start the truck. Do you hear the fuel pump run solidly for 2 seconds?
I'm thinking bad fuel pump relay...they aren't the most reliable things, and they will come and go when they're going out. It's an $8 part, located in the under-hood fuse box.
Swap it with another relay in the fuse box and see if the problem returns (or moves to that system. I therefore reccommend the A/C or fog lamps). If so, look towards your fuel pump (or possibly the inertia cutoff switch). If not, it's the relay.
