help repair

any one care to help me get my truck back together this weekend? i have the parts and tools. got tired of being jerked around by Tony at Tony's Auto Repair here in Atwater. he now says that the shaft in the transmission is installed backwards. im having my truck towed home on 6/29/07. im off work this weekend, any and all help is greatly appreciated. someone on craigslist has a c-6 transmission for sale, came out of a car. will this transmission work in my f-250? he has the torque converter and a shift kit that goes with it, selling it for $150.00.is this worth buying.

I think there are two different bellhousing patterns for the C6, so make sure you get the right one.

If you could swing getting it towed up here to Oakdale, I'd gladly give you a hand, I'm in the middle of putting my '31 Dodge Chassis together (why I need to get the wheels) and was going to start putting body parts on, etc...try to figure out what I'm doing for Motor mounts.

What all needs to be done to it?

EDIT: I must have delted a line somehow...I'm heading out to Turlock tomorrow to puck up a set of Jeep wheels (ofcourse I never thought I'd need the ones that I gave to Dale...), so will be in the area...I think Turlock and Atwater are only about 15 minutes apart? I could swing by, maybe we could figure out a plan.

The car type C6 has a different tailshaft - the one used in Factory truck F250s with a 390 is much shorter, and uses a heavy duty universal joint. If you do interchange them, you will have to shorten your driveshaft and change out the front saddle.

Clint,

I thought all 2wd trucks and cars used the same output shafts? When you order from TCI it says the same transmisson with 14'' tailshaft and slip yoke fits cars and 2wd trucks. As far as I know only the bolt on yoke was a different length output shaft.

You could be correct about the F100s and F150s. Mine is a F250 camper special and it is different.

Easy enough to measure before you go look at the one on CL. And yes, mine has the bolt-on yoke.

I just went through the TCI installer list and the Accurate Transmisson List. They both show the same transmisson with 14'' tailshaft and slip yoke was used in cars and also used in F100-F350 2wd trucks with 332-428 FE engines. So you should be okay as long as you have a slip yoke end and not a bolt on , if its bolt on its a whole different can of worms.

And make sure that it's an FE bolt pattern C6. They made the C6 to fit virtually everything, so there's an FE pattern, a Windsor smallblock pattern which also fits the 351C and 300-6 and the big block pattern which fits the 429/460 and 351M/400 as well as the 6.9/7.3 diesel...so that's 3 different patterns, and since the pattern is cast into the case there's no removable bell to simply change. You gots to have the right one...

3Mike6, I've got complete set of 15" wheels off of an '85 Cherokee. C'mon up and you can have them... (and help me work on this darn project truck while you're up here...:rolleyes)

I'll have to see what I got going on, I work all this weekend, but usually get out early in the afternoon.
Mike, I'll give you 2 of the rims back, they're too wide for the front for me(15X8). I'm going to try to drop off the 460's dizzy this morning too.

Mike, I have 4 ea 30X9.50X15 on black spoke rims - the tires are good, with more than 85% rubber. The rims need cleaning and maybe paint - perhaps the color of the body.

OK, $150 is a good price, if it is a good transmission that will work in your truck. The C6 has different bell housings which can not be interchanged - one for the 302 or 300 six will not fit on the back of a FE V8.

Also, don't forget to check the tailshaft as Gashog and myself have noted in prior posts.

Thanks for the offer on the wheels gents, but I ran out to Turlock last night and bought the set...4 aluminum wheels with tires and lug nuts for 60 bucks...they'll work well for rolling the chassis around.

No, the 460 is one of the 385 series engines, and the 390 is an older FE casting. They will not interchange. The 400M one will not work either.

Yep, it's a no-go.
300,302,351W&C use the small block bell
351M,400,429,460 use the big block bell
and the FE's(352,360,390,406,410,427,428) have their own bell
