I have a 96 F150 4x4 with 302 in it auto trans 75,000 miles. It only gets 11 mpg with city or highway driving. Is this normal? I have changed fuel filter already and am wondering if there are any other mods or suggestions to improve economy.
Do a complete tune up if you haven't done one recently, and open up the exhaust are a couple of things that will get you started. I have an '87 F150 with the 302, and was getting around 12 MPG when I bought it. I've put a MSD TFI replacement coil on it, along with Ford Motorsport 9mm spark plug wires, NGK sparkplugs, NAPA/Echlin cap and rotor, and a Dynomax cat-back exhaust, and I'm now getting just under 15 MPG doing mostly city driving. I made one long trip on the highway doing near 80 most of the way (2700 rpm or so) and got 18 MPG. I got 19 one time earlier doing around 65 the whole way.
