Black Smoke

Does anyone know what would be causing big puffs of black smoke out of the pipes on my 6.4? The tailpipes started getting black around 1500 miles, now i've got just over 2,000 miles and am billowing black smoke from every stoplight. I noticed that for the first 1,000 miles, the truck regen'd alot. Maybe every 100-150 miles. After I hit the 1,000 mile mark, I can only recall two regens. I called the dealer, got the bring it in and we'll take a peek response....didn't have a good feeling after that phone call. Any info from anyone else?

Check out my post earlier...
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...st-on-08s.html

It is currently in the shop now getting checked out, and they don't know anything yet. The service writer thinks the technician is getting multiple codes and can't figure it out, but he is not sure until they talk in the morning. They will then check out my complaint on the transmission. He did mention something about bad fuel or poor fuel and mentioned something about adding cetane additives to help. I will know more tomorrow and will post later.

If you're seeing black smoke out the tail pipe, your dpf filter is cracked. The root cause is soot overload due to many different reasons. Did you notice a drop in power? I just replaced 2 filters and a cracked DOC on one of my test trucks because the CAC had a split tube. Too bad your dealer is about to use your truck for training. Good thing its under warranty.

Not so much a drop in power but more of a "knocking" sound from the motor. I just got home from dinner and took the truck and as soon as I started it up, it went into regen. I got on the highway and drove her pretty hard for about 10 miles or so at around 85-90mph. I was thinking that the high speed and high rpm's would finish off the regen faster. Got home and put her in park and guess what? Still in regen. Let it sit for 5 minutes or so and it was still doing it so I shut her down. Not sure if this was like this before, but four feet away from the tailpipes was soooo hot, couldnt keep my hand there for more than a few seconds. Also, standing next to the rear tires, really hot air as well and smelled like a kerosene heater.

Dealer gave me the low down...and the low down is....nada! The computer wasn't giving him any codes, that is what was puzzelling the tech. so everything is running to specs. The report..."bad fuel" is causing the black smoke. There are still alot of places that have bad fuel or old fuel still left in their tanks before the new fuel was introduced. I will have to start going to truck stops which is where the freshest fuel would be located. He said black smoke would be a symptom of bad fuel. Also, I need to burn cetane booster, which would help too. He said computers told him that the DPF is clean which does surprise me.

Transmission is good too, go figure! At least it's noted for future out of warranty repair.
So everyone that is billowing soot from tail pipe is considered normal and probably caused from "bad fuel"...although that may not be for everyones diagnoses, just mine!

You need to find a different dealer or take it to an International dealer. The purpose of the dpf is to capture ALL soot. Black smoke is 100% soot. If any gets thru the filter, the filter is cracked, therefore junk. Something caused the filter to crack and needs to be found and repaired. I don't buy the excuse of bad fuel and neither should you. You need to get this thing fixed before it leaves you stranded somewhere. Trust me. I've been testing US07 emissions systems for the past 25 months and have replaced many cracked filters for one reason or another. Your engine is producing too much soot, which means it isn't running properly. An over-fueling injector will cause this and the knock but won't necessarily show up as a fault. The nozzle could be spitting instead of spraying. Wish I could put my finger on it for you.

My dealer just called and basically told me the same thing as geaux-fish. No codes, knock is normal, and they will put out some smoke. He also told me to find a different brand of fuel. I've been going to a mobil station that just opened and has all brand new tanks in the ground so there is no way there was any LSD in those tanks. They did find one unrelated code though....max speed of 95.9 mph! Oops!!!

Both of you have dealers that are clueless. Good luck!

I have that feeling too. What was even more irritating is that when I went to pick the truck up, I asked if they had any cetane booster available. Service writer looked at me and said check with parts. Went to parts, asked about cetane booster, he pulled a couple bottles off the shelf studied them very intensely, then said, "Its got to be one of these." I asked if they were ULSD compliant, and he asked me what I was talking about. He made a call to someone, then gave me the bottle I needed. It is a motorcraft cetane and power booster and when I looked at the bottle, it said right on it ULSD compliant in bold letters. So at least I know I got the right one. Just added it and we'll see what happens.
