Regens Update

Well if some remember I had some issues
with frequent regens.(The white smoke problem)
well after several attempts with calling dealers to help
fix the problem where I can stay stock I finally got one
to help. They have a new flash out that they installed on my
truck and believe it or not it has fixed it so far,Cost me around
150 bucks. The truck has 111,000 miles and running great.
Hope this will help someone else!

Was it the 11b23 or something close to that? That's the last I've heard of. There was one after that but only if the 11b23 caused problems for your truck, Just wondering if there is something newer.

I have the 11b23 and still do the regen white smoke out. I have just learned to live with it. The worst part is when you do not realize the truck went into regen. Then look in your mirror and wonder what is going on back there, did someone spin out, and realize it is you.

I wish someone knew. It is definitely is a humidity/temperature thing. I have a new DPF so I can rule that out. If I took better notes I could maybe tie it to a specific fuel source. I only really use three local stations but never really checked if the smoke occurred more often with a given fuel source. It has never happened that I remember more than a 30 mile radius from my home. So extended city driving may also be a factor. It does not occur that often so it is difficult to pin point any specific cause.

I had white smoke one time when my truck was pretty new. I was traveling accross Indiana and it was Dec and I remember it was around 15 deg outside.

that is the only time I ever had it.

I assume it was because of the extreme cold outside. I blew white for about 2 tenths of a miles and cleared up.

I have only seen the white smoke on 2 occassions, but I had terminated the regen on a short drive and then started up 30 minutes later, when I got on the accelerator, then I had white smoke. I attributed it to excess fuel left over from the incomplete regen. White tailpipe equals white smoke. I am like you guys, is it the cold, humidity, fuel?

When I first bought my 2010 truck I noticed the white smoke for a short period of time. Everytime after that I did not see any smoke when it went into a regen cycle. That does not mean it did not happen I did not see it. I live in South Georgia about 30 miles north of Jacksonville Florida. My truck currently has about 38,500 miles. I do keep Cetane booster in it for every fill up and follow other recommended maintenance guide lines.

Terry, what year/job truck do you have?

I have the original 11B23 update. I belched smoke before it as well as after I got it.
It'll smoke very consistently while the DPF is being heated up to 800F on cool days <60F ambient within the first 5 minutes of regen and if I let it cool down as in coming to a long stop light. The moment I touch the gas, it'll belch smoke no matter how light I'm on the pedal.

I currently have a Ford case open and someone from the factory is supposed to contact me, but I'm currently out of the country and haven't checked

I responded to your post.

Your issue is the stop and go traffic. Modern diesels do not take kindly to starting and then stoping without even getting warmed up. It is a recipe for disaster.

Best to get a commuter car like most have for those short trips.

My regens on straight freeway run about 12-15min. In stop-and-go traffic around town, they can last up to 45min.

Regen will not start until coolant is at leasts 160F. When regen starts, it takes about 5 minutes to physically heat the DPF to at least 800F or hot enough to do anything. If the truck is shut down or regens are shut off before then, nothing was accomplished other than burning about 0.5~1 gallon of fuel.

If on freeway, the bulk of the bulk of the soot starts burning on its own in the first 5 minutes above 800F. It starts to taper off over the next 5-10 more minutes.

The trick is driving so the DPF/exhaust temperature as high as possible, if possible. Soot starts to burn at 800F and burns more rapidly the higher it gets. The computer limits DPF temperature to around 1250F to avoid uncontrolled burns so the DPF doesn't melt. Cold weather and Stop and go traffic results in lower temperatures and soot doesn't burn as quickly, so much regens run longer as a result.

If the truck is constipated and regens are interrupted, it'll simply pick up from where it left off earlier when it's full again. Think of it as a reusable vacuum bag, but you're not allowed to empty it until it's been running long enough (heated up).

If the DPF is overfull, you'll see a 'Drive to Clean' message. If regen hasn't allowed to do anything long enough, and the DPF is plugged up beyond limits, the engine will eventually shut itself down permanently
