Pyrometer

Where is the best place to drill and tap the hole and install the probe for the pyrometer on a turbo diesel????

In the downpipe right after the turbinator. Or you could mount it in the driver side manifold at the collector on the bottom side. I mounted mine in the downpipe, little bit of insurance in case the probe breaks. Rather have it find its way out the tail pipe then in my turbo, lol.

I understand it gives more accurate readings in the drivers exhaust manifold. I have mine in the DP as 162 said just because there was already a hole there for it. I will be moving it soon I am just gathering info now so I can relate the before and after temps and the temps.

Most DP's here are installed pre-turbo for accuracy in the temps entering the turbo. Post turbo will be a bit colder (300F).

Here's a shot looking straight up under the drivers side.

The accuracy is better in the manifold yes, but if you know the temp diffrence and ranges that can vary then run it in the dp and dont look back. I know my temp math and i know the diffrences in temps and all that jazz, so I safely can run it in the DP with no worries. Good luck

this is the reason I am taking readings so I can post accurately when I do the swap to pre turbo.

Problem with post turbo is the time lag. By the time you get too hogh damage may have been done already. Someone here had both and noted the slow reaction of the post turbo IIRC. I think getting it closer to the pistons might be important too.

Your correct but if you know these time variances and temp diffrences then you'll be ok. If your a newbie and dont want any worries then mount it driver side manifold. As for me and my knowledge, we'll stick with the dp mount.

Neal, that's too funny. I missed it the 1st time around. DP...... pre-turbo, that must be for a counter rotating engine Haw!

I will defer to the master, cowboy steve, on this one. I'll bet it's varies with your right foot though.

Well, since the post is being referred to my endless amounts of infinent wisdom. I'll say that your dp to header temp varies from 250-310 degree's and the time lapse on my rig is about 2.75 seconds delay from pyro in the dp to match the header temp. These are numbers that I use and I would highly recommend you use the 300* diffrence mark to be safe. Your rig shouldn't see more then 1250* at the manifold which is 950* at the DP. I found all these numbers and temp diffrences by using a radar heat gun so they are pretty accurate. if you want to be sure what your temp differences are I would purchase a radar heat gun and check the temps at the Dp, turbo exhaust housing and the manifolds. Then you'll have your numbers dead on. Every truck varies. good luck!
