hi ive just joined the site as i`ve got a customer who has imported a 6.0lpsd superduty 05 model, this is a bit of exotica in england so i was pleased when i found this excellent site. the truck has developed an ear peircing whistle from the turbo at idle, strangely the noise goes away as the revs increase and sometimes after driving/ reving will disapear only to return as the engine idles. there is no apparent play in the turbo bearings and it spins freely (turning on cranking) the noise is greater on the exhaust side of the turbo and at first i thought it was coming from the joint between the turbo and the exhaust downpipe but i can`t find a leak. I would appreciate your input thanks.

I'd check the y-pipe (up-pipes) coming from the exhaust manifolds upward. They have a flexible section on either side of the "y" and they tend to fail. The sections look like steel-braided hose and if the material underneath has failed you'll see a lot of soot in that section of the "braid". Produces more of a whooshing sound (its an exhaust leak) rather than a turbo "whine" so we may be talking about different noises but the up-pipe leak is very loud.

keithometune,
First of welcome to FTE lots of good people and info around here.
The EGR valve may be bad, if it was a cracked up-pipe or loose joint in the exhaust system, it should get worse as the RPM's and load are increased.
Are there any other driveability symptoms?
Does it matter if the engine is warm or cold?
How many miles on the truck and are there any mods on it?
its a standard truck with 43k mls on it, turbo boosts at 28psi and it drives ok, no fault codes listed , live data looks good but ive got nothing to compare it to, i agree it would normally get worse as revs increased, the noise was not there when he first got it,noise is there hot and cold
so is the problem on the exhaust side?? check all the pre-turbo hoses and plastic pipes for tears or cracks....so the problem is a loud whistle out the tail pipe??? what year is the truck??
the noise definitley comes from the area of the turbo itself, but seems to be louder on the exhaust side, i`ll check to see if it whistles out of the exhaust pipe, the noise from the engine bay may be drowning it out !
ps its an 05
keith
pps just checked theres no obvious noise from the tailpipe

that 28psi boost you said. Is that all the time under normal driving or just when you punch it?? If you're getting that under normal driving around you got a problem.
