Not sure where to post this but since it's a 96 PSD I'll do it here.
I 've been told that a later model (99 up ?) has a lighter fan blade from father Ford. If so will it bolt up to my 96 fan clutch ? I lost my water pump & AC compressor both before 70K.... I really think the shear weight of the fan assembly contributed to their demise, especially the WP. I was going to try an electric fan but a friend of mine who has been/is a Ford R&D engineer for 30 years said NO ! If I tow no way. He's the man so I'm off in another direction.
Any Ford parts guys on here or some one in the know.
Thanks
Yep, most electric fans can't keep up. IDK what caused your failure but I doubt it was due to the fan being too heavy. Many sories of the fans going well over 300K. A premature water pump failure was likely caused by sand in the coolant. A good flush and a filter will help the cooling system a bunch. IDK if the plastic fan will fit or not.
Thank Jim. Coolant filter is on my list. New WP is a NAPA "lifetime" on truck now.
But still a PITA to install even if free. Tom (Ford engineer) was going to get me a part# but I know he is burried at work. Ford got him on some hush-hush project.
Believe he had his hands on the Lightening & SC Cobra developement. His handle is "Boost Engineer"..
Sorry know sure about the SD fan either. seems I remember hearing about it before but I don't remember the outcome. But I wouldn't worry about as I agree with Jim. The failure wasn't due to the fan.
I was just curious.....less recipicating weight would definitly be a + in my book as long as cooling was the same. Less mass would mean less stress & work to get it turning ....and keep it turning..
Still want to get a coolant filter after I get the essentials...DP,intake, & gauges!
Then make sure tranny is running cool enough while towing..
Thanks
Might be a good mod for the future when mine takes a dump. Maybe someone will jump in here that knows if the plastic fan fits.
Hee-hee...now i have two projects.....see if there is a lighter replacement fan & hook a pres/vac gauge to cranckcase to see just what lives in our PSD's..
Unfortunately my race car project comes first at the moment...BUT...
no tow truck....No race !!

Not to contradict your engineering friend, but I have known a few guys to run a double Windstar electric fan with no trouble whatsoever. I have also known a few guys run with NO fan and get away with it because the cooling system in these trucks is so stout.
Probably depends a lot on where you live though, the no fan boys are up in the northern part of the continent. I wouldn't want to try it in Texas .

I certainly am not going to contradict my buddy. 30+ years with Ford and mainly with power train R&D !! He's had his had in the PSD developement I'm sure...his fortea is a "Boost Engineer"...He is also consultant to the big boys drag racing with huge blowers...belt driven & turbos..
He did say if it wasn't a "Work Truck or a Towing rig" .....you could probably do it !! He related to maintaining a constant flow of air at all times...not just when electric fan cuts on..
I wouldn't want to try it in Texas either !!
