Ok guy's,
What is your recomendations for Spark Plugs and aftermarket COP's????
I have a 99 SD with a 5.4 in it, that has had a random miss, that is now getting worse. It does it the most when it rains, so I am figuring it is a COP going bad or the COP boot. It is not storing any codes as to what one is the culprit, so I figure I may as well replace all of em, and the spark plugs too. What Brand plugs have you guys had the best luck with??
I bought the truck used, a year ago, with 150,000 or so on it, and its got 160,000 on it now. The truck runs like a raped ape, with no other problems.
Don't have your engine, but my preferences are Champions, Autolites, AC Delcos and NGKs. If I have a choice I like to get plugs that are "chromed" or have a silvery plating. Seems like the the black plugs rust in place too often, but then that was my experience when I lived in the Pacific NorthWET.
For some reason the expensive Bosch never gave me good service in any car I put them in.
I always use autolite double plat. and Ford or NAPA cops, I maintain about 40 company trucks, and have 2 of my own with 5.4`s and have never had trouble with these.
i had a v10 in an excursion do the same thing. i changed the plugs out to bosch platinum plus 2's and still was there. then i heard that ford gas motors absolutely do not like these plugs. so i got motorcraft ones which the guy said were not platinum or anything special but turned out to be. i put them in and it cleared up for awhile then returned. i took it to the dealer and asked them to do a wdt test ( world diagnostics test ) and they picked up the number three cylinder coil going. replaced it and never looked back.
by the way, i had put in the bosch plugs and ran them for about 50 kms, then pulled them to put in the motorcraft ones. when i did, i looked at each plug VERY closely, and i could tell the number 3 cylinder was different. it was darker with more carbon build up on it. after i took it to the dealer and they found it was gone, it made me feel better that i had found it beforehand. if it ever happened again i could find out which coil was going without having to pay the dealer to run the test. also cheap coils can be had on ebay so i carried one all the time with me.

Has anyone used any of the performance coils from Accel or Grannelli????
Summit has the Accel's for $ 25.00 each and the Grannelli's are $ 50.00 each. The local parts store's are talking between $ 50.00 - $ 75.00 each for OEM replacements.
IMO...and from all the readings and postings here at FTE...Stick with OEM Motorcraft parts when it comes to plugs and COPs.
The deal is...that there is absolutely no reason for the "high" performance COP on a stock modular engine. If you are not going to replace the OEM fuel injectors, then there is no benefit to the so called "high" performance COPs.
TIP: When replacing the plugs and COPs, make sure to replace the boots as well.
