I'd check the preload on every lifter when you have it apart. Most of the time you can't just get away with throwing a cam in and expecting it to work. Most all aftermarket performance cams have a different base circle that will cause preload problems that can act as you have described.

I believe that you wrote you had a rebuild book. If it's tom monroes excellent tome it mentions how to check the preload on the lifters. You may have to shim some/all/none of them, or as I had to do grudgingly remove some material from either the rocker mount on the head (pain) or from the rocker sled (what I did) as it had too much clearance.
