That EGR sensor

Ok I unpluged the EGR but as I understand hot gas is still going through the cooler. How hard is it to install the exhaust bypass? I can weld so could I make a block for the exhaust myself? My truck pukes when pulling a heavy load and this is a real pain adding coolant all the time.

Thanks Randy

I ordered the $35 blockoff plate from elite diesel yesterday in liue of the $250 or so to replace the uppipe for the delete version. I have not done the install yet but I hear it is a 3 hour job mainly because of the tight working space on these engines. I am not sure if the block off plate needs to be tack welded or what. My truck is coming back from warranty repairs and so it may be a little while before I install the plate and find out as I do now want to pull the plate back out in the event my truck needs to go back in for warranty and give ford an excuse to avoid washing their hands on other unrelated warranty repairs.

I would imagine you could easily fab or weld your own. If you look at LIPD and Elite web site you can see what they are fabricating for "blocking" or "deleting". I would advise that if you find the scoop version on yours remove it. I understand you will need a tuner to disable the EGR system to avoid trouble codes and etc. I just ordered an SCTII from LIPD and the disable EGR is on my tune list.

If I was more welding and fabricator inclined I would do it myself as you suggested.

In any regard stopping the hot exhaust gases from going through your EGR cooler and avoid hot flashing the coolant to critcial temperatures must extend the life of your engine particulalry in your case. Seems that all the reputables shops do this mod which explains alot.

My coolant loss from the degas bottle was just recently diagnosed from failed headgaskts or headbolts after numerous test and etc to rule out other potentials such as the EGR system. Thus the warranty repair noted above.

Are you 100% sure it is your EGR that is causing the puking? If under warranty let ford deal with it as it should not puke in any event if stock. Because if your heads are leaking then a blockoff plate will not resolve your problems.

BC Powerstroke,

Thank you very much. Your reply gave me all the information I need and much more than asking friends and such in the past two months.

Randy777,

As BC Powerstroke said first have your local trusted 6.0 diesel tech diagnose and fix the puking problem. It could be head gaskets or a bad EGR cooler. After your truck is properly repaired then as BC Powerstroke suggested install an EGR delete up-pipe and turn off your EGR valve and you will be good to go.
