Fuel Filters

We recently got a couple of 6.0's at work and I just discovered that there is an additional fuel filter on the frame rail. I went to the local auto parts store and they only list 1 fuel filter on these trucks. Is the frame rail filter the same one as under the hood? If not where do I go to get them?

Thanks for the help.

You most likely have to go to Ford on the fuel filter inside the frame rail. That filter in the frame rail also is where you will drain water off from the fuel system, you'll know when, the light will come on saying "Water in Fuel". You'll need an allen wrench....... No they're not the same filter's.

Here is a link to the instructions on how to change the fuel filters.

If you have a local International repair/parts shop they are about the cheapest place to get them. The International part number is 1847170. Here is a link to International's dealer locator.

Finally, if you don't have a local International dealer, here is a website with them for sale really cheap.

Whats the benefit to having a 2nd filter that nobody carries? Sounds like a dumb idea to me. Thanks for the part # Beerstalker. I have a IH dealer fairly close. Do you have the part number for the under hood fuel filter handy? As long as I'm making the trip I might as well stock up on both of them. If not I'll do a search and find it.

Thanks for the help.

I may be mistaken but I believe both filters are in the filter kit. I know ford sells them as a kit and so does baldwin.

I don't know who sold you what but they come in a kit with both filters. The primary one is the larger one on the frame rail. IH/Navistar and motocraft sell them as a set. I would suggest you get back with whoever sold only one to you as it has to be the wrong one. Go get em!

I wish it were that simple. I'm guessing my guys changed the 1 filter on their trucks and if they had a second filter in the box it was probably thrown away since they couldn't find a place to put it. Too many years experience just changing one filter under the hood, no one thought to look for a place for the other filter to go.

Yeah, Yippie, aren't you happy with them!! The primary one was missed and that is where the H2O is seperated and needs checking. Oh well, time for an in house training seminar, maybe w/ finger food . . .

The primary one on the frame rail catched the most stuff anyways - ouch!!!!

The HFCM (frame rail filter) filters down to a certain micron level and also acts as the water seperator. The secondary filter (on the motor) filters to a lower micron level to ensure 99.99% filtering and less clogging.

Look in my gallery under "fuel" and you will see pictures of filters and the locations of both filter assemblies.

Both fuel filters should come together in the box
