I just towed for the first time with my stock 07 f350 drw auto 4.10. My fifth wheel is 12.5 k and when went up over Vail Pass in Colorado. I was lucky to get 35mph out of it. I didn't think I would break any land speed records but I expected more. My old 7.3l with a 70 hp chip and exhaust would do at
least 10mph more. I thought with all the impovements on the new one it would do better than it did.
Fgibby, how many miles do you have on your truck? It really takes 10-15000 miles to get these engines broke in well. You may be interested to check out this thread, and the one it links to for someone who initially was displeased with the towing ability and has now seen a big improvement after getting some more miles on the engine.
Shoot, you would have passed me in my 86 Chevy S-10 that I owned when I lived out there. And that was empty if I took the seats out and left the spare tire at home.
The West side of that pass is difficult, long and steep at high altitude.
My truck has 4k on it so I hope I have the same luck as others and it only gets better. I will do some mods but after reading about others being denied warranty repairs i think I might wait awhile.
Give it an exhaust and a good SCT tune. I remember when i bought mine last year and was actually kind of dissappointed also in the performance. Literally at about 14k the truck seemed to wake up. Stock acceleration has noticeably improved as has the mileage. Mine is stock with the exhaust straight piped. Make sure to change the oil every 5k and the fuel filters at 15k and it will run great. These trucks love fresh oil. P.S. Dont bother with an aftermarket air intake. They are junk. Went that route for about 10k with no mileage gains. Keep that stock.
Dont forget, the trailer weights 12.5K, the truck probably weights around 8k, throw in passengers, water, other assorted crapola and you're at 22k lbs plus. Even well broken in, that's alot of mass to move.
Honestly, loaded down, I'm not really impressed with the 6.0. They seem to like to spend a lot of time in the 3K+ PRM range and act more like a gasser than a diesel.
Empty is another story, but who buys a diesel not to tow anything?
If you're actually doing a bunch of heavy towing, don't chip it. You'll blow head gaskets like they are going out of style.
It all depends on what your trying to do. Aside from 3/4 or 1 ton trucks, to move 23K lbs takes a truck (meaning a flatbed, cab chassis etc).
If you have driven any of the latest "trucks" compared to a F250, 350 or 450 I don't think you'd have any complaints, gas motor feeling or otherwise

Mike
I do heavy towing and it's chiped. 1 year and 9 months 87k on the odometer and I have had no problems with heads or anything and it has had a chip in it of some type since 3k. It really depends on how you are able to handle a chip as to rather your going to have problems with the heads or not and I have seen and heard people with head problems with everything stock on these trucks as well.
I just towed a Red Cross MFU (mobile feeding unit). It's an old re-built carnival concession trailer. I was told it weighs 17K as I towed it.
I've got an early 03 with the 6.0, automatic and the 3.73s. It pulled that trailer to 55 (rural road so I couldn't safely do any faster) mph as smooth and easy as silk!
That's the first time I've ever pulled that much weight and the truck made it look and feel easy! Anyone who says you can't pull much with the early 6.0s needs to come visit me. I'll be glad to let them drive.
12.5k was pretty loaded. The truck tows great on the flat, smooth with great power. You hardly notice the trailer is there. I'm was just hoping for better power in the mountains.
I have an early 2003 wih 3.73 and tow on our steep Coquihala Pass grades in the BC Rocky mountains holding 115km/hr towing approx. 8-10,000lb stock untuned truck with my EGT at ~1250 degress (one time event as I normaly only tow 6,000lbs). I must of passed 2 dozen chebbies, dodges and 7.3L on one particular hill during this last hunting seeason that I think is 10km long at 6-8% where the truckers litterly "crawl".
My 6L did get stronger over time. I do have some goodies but otherwise untuned truck. My 03 appears to be slighly stronger than my companies 2005 and 2006 models though. I ordered an SCT tuner mainly for MPG and increased exhaust braking capability as I am happy with my stump pulling power.
I am guessing you are not broken in yet or something else may be going on as my brothers 04 pulls his 12,000lb at 95km/hr on "our hill" with the rest of traffic.

I have 5000 miles on my 06,I pull around 12K lbs on my GN hitch
and use the SCT towtune....Its a night and day difference from stock.....
We run 80MPH and beat the snot out of with no issues and planty of power..
