My step-son just called me saying that his Ranger won't start. It's a 1998 with a 2000 3.0 ltr motor in it. The problem seems to be with the alarm system. I gave him the truck about a year and a half ago.
He said that once before the truck wouldn't turn over and the alarm went off. It did that for a little while and then let him start it up. Hasn't happened in quite a while so he forgot all about it.
Tonight, it happened again while he was at a store not too far from his house. I had a Dodge that I had to disconnect the alarm system brain in order to get it to work. Do any of you know of something like this happening with the Ranger? Had a '93 with no problems. Have an F150 screw 4X4 and hope to have no problems.
He's going to disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes to see if it clears the memory banks. If that doesn't work, what next?
When you attempt to start is does it do nothing? or does it crank and just not actually startup? You didnt specify what it did tonight when it didnt start up. If the motor cranks and is still a no go then replace the fuel pump relay.
The factory system will turn on a light on the dash when you turn the key. THe light *should* blink/flash if it does not like the key you are using. It gives some indication, anyway, that the key is not recognized. If it is not factory, you are on your own...
I think you need to figure out if it is a PATS, or whatever system in there before looking to disconnect stuff. From what I know, you cannot bypass the PATS and it cannot be removed. If he has another key, try using that one. If it works, run to the dealer, and get a blank cut, and program the blank. In later models you need TWO WORKING keys to be able to program a third.... The blanks for a 96 cost about $30, and that is without programming or cutting.
Warning to all used car buyers with a PATS(passive anti-theft system): Make sure the dealer gives you 2 keys, or you will pay to have it towed and re-programmed when you lose the one key you have...

One problem, I haven't been around the truck when this happened. My step-son has it and he lives about 50 miles from me. I'll try to get some answers and post up late.
my wifes aftermarket will sometimes not let the car start. seems if she is not careful that she can bump the keyfob and partially set the alarm system. everything, horn lights etc but no start. have him try to lock, unlock to see if it helps that is what I ended up doing.
