This is a sporadic issue. In the past couple of weeks, my 99 Expedition would not turn over when you try to start it. All lights in the dash looked fine, headlights would come on, but it wouldn't turn over whatsoever.
We get it to a fellow and he checks the starter, battery cables, cleans the battery connections, checks the battery. All are in working order.
Tonight, the same problem resurfaced. I disconnected the battery, to see if anything would "reset". No luck there. I noticed the sparkplug wires at the coil caps on both sides of the 4.6L were not all seated down properly. I pushed on them. The car seemed to start fine then.
When the key is turned, I think I can hear a click or two, but I don't want to say for sure. But it seems that if it sets for a time, say a few hours, it would crank up no problem.
Any ideas? I don't think the starter regulator or relay was replaced and wonder if that can sproradically make this happen or if it could be some other sensor.
I don't have the money to be wasting on a dealer to be checking this out all day at $75/hr, so any help would be appreciated..
The starter sileniod could be the problem. Carbon build up could be causing poor connections at the contact points. Also it could be the starter motor itself. It might have a dead spot or two. If you can remove it, I would take it to auto zone or a local place that can test the starter.
The fellow we took it to, specializes in starters and alternators. He removed the starter, cracked it open, checked the armature and brushes and solenoid. He said the starter looked almost brand new with little wear.
He said all the cables and connections were fine and cleaned up the batt. posts, which did have some corrosion on them.
So that eliminates the starter. I would look to the sileniod. The carbon build up/poor contact will be internal. Probably just replace it and see what happens.
I have the same exact problem with my 2007 Expedition. Difference is I just bought it yesterday and it only had about 50 miles on it. In the morning I couldn't get it started even though all the accessories worked fine. After about 10 minutes, it started just fine. I drove it during the day and parked it outside my work place. At night, the same problem happened. It wouldn't start. Finally after about 10 minutes it started again.
I brought it to the dealer and they can't find anything wrong. Have you had any luck finding out what the problem is???
