Basically it's an electronically controlled AOD. It's lighter duty than the E4OD, and was put behind 302's only until the new body style. The basic transmission is still being used in '07 in the F-150. I think it's a decent tranny. Mine's got 320,000 miles on it and still going, although it is pretty tired.
Have you done a lot of towing with it? The original owner had the truck set up to tow a fifth wheeler, so I'm wondering how much wear in on it. I'm going to be towing an 18' boat (somewhere around 3000 lbs), I'm curious how long I can expect the trany to last.
If it was taken care of and maintained it should last a long time thats what a truck tranny is built for to last also if your truck has the towin package it should have the tranny cooler that helps...
Ho many miles on the truck? That will play a big role in it as well. I had a 4R70W in my 96 with 165k on it. Not an ounce of trouble with it, just keep it clean. Heck look at brown, he's got 320k on his!!
It has 83,000 miles on her. I bought the truck a few months ago and did a trany service. Obviously it was the first time for that since it had one of those mystery parts lying in the trany pan. It shifts fine, just curious on how much towing it can handle without too much wear and tear.

I don't think it towed very often. (I'd hope not, it's gutless enough empty.) There is a brake controller in it and the previous owner told me he towed a skidsteer with it one summer. Mainly the truck was driven all over the country as a company truck. I bought it with 304K on it and know the only owner, and the history of the truck.

i wouldn't expect to see 300k with the first service done at 83k but it should hold up pretty well. i had one in an ex texas highway patrol car with 150k and no problems. but they were meticulous with their service intervals
