I would love to hear your opinions on which bumper I should buy for my shop truck. That's "shop" with a 'P', not "show" with a 'W'. I am torn between the chrome and the stainless due to cost. Is the Stainless worth DOUBLE? Is the chrome that bad? realize it is foreign, but it's half the price.
Does anyone have the chrome one, is it much thinner steel? Would you buy it again?
Who will be the first to post "you get what you pay for!"?
Shop truck could use a plain steel and get it powder coated "chrome" If it gets messed up in future, at least you could repair it yourself and paint or re-powder. S/S is a good value long term and you can repair and polish yourself as well. As far as chrome, it only looks good when new and repairs are crazy making the imports about the same price. And, we don't always get what we pay for but wish we did. I would measure value not price. Let us know what you decide. The truck is really awesome, I would like to take a ride in it.

Stainless is forever! I am about as cheap as you can get (except for Bobby ) and even I sprung for SS on my occasional driver (never to be confused with a show truck).
I have stainless on my panel and had it on 2 others (pickups).
I'm not a big maintenance guy, so I like the stainless and, along with the coated wheels, about eliminate all routine maintenance on the panel.
I bought another stainless for the rear of another pickup, Mutt, but sold the truck before installing it. I also used a pickup rear bumper on the panel; looks less bulky.
Sorry to hijack here but what's the latest on your GMC, Col? Us Cali drivers have got to stick together when it comes to these things ...
If you mean my '58 Mercury M-100, she looks great, I just need to get the "Wee Beastie" new paint all over now, instead of on the just fixed Sheet Metal, Grille & Bumper.
I have chrome on mine. Bought them from Classic Auto Parts in OKC, I like them fine. A friend who bent his front and was looking at replacing it found them to have best price, and after looking at mine bought his there.
I had a 68 Ford PU with chrome bumpers. It was almost a show quality truck except for the rear bumper. The previous owner had over tightened a bumper bolt and it had cracked the chrome allowing water to get in and rust an area the size of a golf ball! Stainless is my vote if you're planning on keeping the truck. If you're selling it. Bolt on a 2x4. Just kidding, that's only for guys in Rio Linda. Jag
With the crappy chrome we're getting these days, I'd go with stainless, or like CIAF said, powder coat it. Because I'm fabbing a custom rear bumper, neither chrome or stainless is an option on the front for me. I'll either powder coat both, or base/clear paint them. Depends on if I find the color I want is available in powder coat.
What were the costs you were quoted for the chrome versus SS? hen I bought my bumpers three years ago, the SS was only about $50 higher for each bumper. Jag
