A/C help

My A/C started blowing hot the other day, so I went out and bought an A/C recharge kit from autobarn. After I hooked it up the gauge barly moved, and the Clutch would not engage. So I added coolant and brought the pressure up and the clutch would only engage for a second then disengage for a second then back on and soforth while always blowing warm air. I added more coolant and still there was no change, On and off for a second at a time. I dont want to add more coolant as this would bring me into the red, and I dont think it would solve the issue anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions before I head to the mechanic and get robbed?

If it was that low to begin with, then a proper recharge would have to include a full evacuation first before charging. If you have air introduced into the system, you won't get a proper charge or good cooling, and from the sound of it you have air in there now. Best bet if you don't have the tools is to take it to a shop and 1) find and fix the leak and 2) evacuate and charge the system.
