Guy's I've got a problem with the wife's expedition that I can't figyre out, It will start fine in the morning and after you run it for a few min, shut it off it will just click, But after it sits for a while itwill start right back up with no trouble, what could be the sorce of this latest pain? Already changed the sol on the firewall, But the clicking seem's to be coming from behind the link, or sol area, at the firewall.
Check your battery connections. I have had a bad ground connection cause that same failure. Best way is to completely remove the connection, soak it in water and/or use a good battery terminal cleaner; both on the battery and the connector. Wipe them off, you do not need to scrape or even use a terminal cleaner tool, water or the cleaner chemicals do a fine job. Then just reattach the connector. I found this to work real well.
You could possibly have a bad starter. If the starter gets too hot due to worn parts or just because it's old then you can have problems starting it back up after you have shut it off until it cools down a little. I know on older cars this tends to happen when you have a worn or old starter. I'd give the above sollution a try first with the battery connectors and then if that doesn't work I'd give the starter a shot. Hope this helps.
I've had this same problem for the past few years. Only difference is it wouldn't start at all, even after sitting for a while. Just click when I turned the key. The only way I could start it was to jump the starter underneath the car. A real pain!! Especially in our wonderful winter blizzards!! Here is my remedy...(Make sure you disconnect the battery before doing this). Disconnect and clean your connectors to the starter real good, put a thin layer of dielectric grease on the bolts, washers, nuts and connector ends and reconnect them. Hook the battery back up and start the car. Yesterday was the first time I put the grease on my connections so hopefully I won't have this problem for a long time. Seems funny that the car would start when parked in my garage but as soon as I drove it to work and it sat outside in the elements it wouldn't start. So, I figured there was moisture, salt, ice and snow building up underneath the car. Wish me luck that it starts after work today.
Has anyone else have the same thing happen to them? Is this the right fix?
