7.3L shut off while slowing down to an intersection
This is my Dad's truck, a 2000 F250 4x4 xcab with AT and 7.3L and 120K. Has been running great but just yesterday it died while he was slowing down to a light, with no throttle applied. He said it lugged real rough for a second or two, then died while he was rolling. He put it in neutral and it fired right up. Did the exact same thing later that day. Once it fires up, it takes right off and responds as normal.
He changed his fuel filter and oil a couple k miles ago. He suspected bad fuel and drained his bowl last night. Will know if that changed anything this morning. He was half-way through his last fill up though, bad fuel would have started showing symptoms immediately right?
What next? Put it on a computer to see if any codes come off? Replace the CPS? Diesel Kleen? OR just wait to see if it happens again?
Classic symptoms indicating that the CPS is a likely candidate. If you can limp along, order one from dfuser (unless a local dealer has the new "B" version in stock - it's about $25 from the dealer, and dfuser ships free for a total price of $25. Lots of guys have used the new part and it's working out great.
Hay Ed.....I am having the same problem....you need to get the truck somewhere to get it scanned. I changed out my CPS which did nothing. I'm leaning towards IPR or IPS or the undercover harness. Where in ME are you.
My truck did the same thing. I changed the CPS and no more problems. I too had a wiring harness start coming loose before that. It would run really rough, but never died on me. CPS would be my guess, and isn't hard to put in and try at least. If it isn't the CPS at least you'll have an extra one.
Well I just talked with him and he had a code pulled at a jiffy lube place and it said CPS. He couldn't find one at the first couple places and ended up going to NAPA, was $204! Not sure who is more expensive, NAPA or the dealerships.... But, everything is running good now. Thanks for the feedback!
Well, not to mention that $200 Napa part will likely fail. Sorry but get a $25 spare or be stuck on the side of the road. You can't beat that kind of insurance at that price.
I did the same thing and I went thru 4 aftermarket CPS. Do yourself a favor and take the one back to NAPA and get your money back, it a warrantied part so just tell them that it failed. Go to the ford dealer and tell them you want the gray CPS part B, all dealers should be able to get them now. The aftermarket sensor will fail!
nice pics, really easy to follow. got it done in about 30 minutes, most of the time trying to get the right tools. snapped off a 1/4" drive socket, had to get a 3/8 drive from Sears. New CPS appears to have solved the problem. thanks again...
