Spark plug question

I have an '04 with 51K on it.

I'm reading where a lot of guys are changing their plugs prior to the 100K mark. I've had two 5.4L's that went the 100K, and my companies 4.6L Expedition did as well.

What say you gurus?

Most of us say 3 years or 30~50 thousand miles max.... we are more concerned with corrosion, and heat cycle loosening, then longevity of the plug gap

Most of us agree that Fords 100K "tune up" interval is silly and catastrophically dangerous

Most of us also agree that stock heat range Autolite or MotorCraft plugs (new style with anti corrosion plating) is the way to go

I changed mine right after I bought my truck w/ 41k on the clock. All the plugs were tight, clean, w/ no signs of corrosion. It made me feel better knowing everything was tight and new, seeing as how I had no maintenance history on this thing. To go 100k is just asking for trouble IMO, I don't care what Ford or anyone else says.

I used Autolite Platinum plugs and I replaced the boots w/ Napa pieces while I was in there. No sense changing the plugs and not the boots. A little anti-sieze on the threads of the plugs, a dab of dielectric grease in each end of the boots, 168 in/lbs of torque and your good to go!! Oh and don't forget to blow the holes out w/ air as your removing the plugs to keep everything clean.

And I plan on changing them again at 75k, just in case anyone's curious.

When you remove the screw that holds the COP, you'll pull it up and the boot will be attached to the bottom of the it. The boot may stay attached to the plug, as I had a few do this. Just pull up on it and it will come right off. It has a spring inside of it, which is how the spark energy reaches the plug from the COP. I recommend changing these w/ the plugs as I had one spring in particular that was really stuck to the plug. As I pulled on it, it stretched beyond recognition. I don't think it would have worked very well after that.

Changing the boots w/ the plugs is just cheap insurance.

Yeah, I bought everything, plugs and boots, from Napa. The boots will come w/ new springs. Just make sure they sell you 10 of them. They intially tried to sell me a "kit" w/ just 8 and then sell me 2 kit's. I found the p/n on their website for the individual boot's and springs and just ordered 10 of them.

Good luck!!
