I've just read about this and can't hardly believe that it is for real. I guess it will make the lawyers happy or the state with the extra revenue but this is out of hand:
That is horrible, I haven't heard anything about it here in IL but it sounds like I should start paying attention and vot against it. That is nothing but a ploy to make money for the state. If they person is a bad enough driver just suspend their license. It is pretty much saying, yeah we should take your license away, but if you want to give me some money we'll forget about that and let you keep driving. Just another case of them making new laws to generate more money, rather than enforcing the laws that we have.
i wish the gov would understand that they are not here to make money, just govern the country. but i would expect no less when all you got in government is business people.
i am all for fining people when they do wrong, but they should not make it into a revenue making source, and this sounds really like the concept behind it is money, not public safety.
I'd say drunk driving, speeding, inattentive driving, red-light running, driving while suspended and tailgating are out of hand.
If you can't afford the ticket fines and such, drive safely so that you don't have to pay them.
Jason
In a way I'd agree with you, but this bill is nothing more than a checkbook for the lawyers and the state.
You can raise the fines all you want but most people don't have the money to pay those kind of fines so what are you going to do put them in jail? The red light cameras help with stopping run lights, but then it can also mean that they are going to jamb on their brakes and end up causing a accident. If a cop wants to he can get almost anybody for inattentive driviving or tailgating or for that matter speeding. In some places I've been if you leave a hole big enough for a car it gets filled let alone a big enough hole for safe reaction distance.
DUI and suspended lic need to be addressed but I know of people that have driven on a suspended lic or while drunk anyway. Don't know what the answer is but a big fine isn't going to fix it.
Dennis, the problem is that they are once again trying to legislate common sense. It can't be done. They are trying to raise revenue by passing unrealistic laws to charge unrealistic fines. They are going to end up hurting a lot more people than they help. People need to be able to drive. They will do so, with or without insurance. I agree that we need to be safe as there are more people on the roads than ever before. However, making people afraid to do anything for fear of breaknig a law for doing the wrong thing will end up making situations more dangerous.
Kansas even has an Uninsured Motorist "Tax" on any vehicle insurance policy. I would hate to have a big car collection in Kansas because each vehicle pays the "tax", not each driver....
Now if someone really wanted to make the streets safer... -BAN cell phone use TOTALLY (except a 911 call) in a moving vehicle!
couple these outrageous fines with the fact that cops have to write quotas and its another windfall for the government. Of course with the liberals running amok you need all this extra cash to pay for health care and education for the illegals and all the other happy horse caca they come up with that has no real purpose for the American citizen. Its becoming harder and harder to survive here if youre a Middle class working person..
Here's a quote that I think sums up the ultimate reasoning behind crap like this:
"Did you really think we want those laws observed? said Dr. Ferris.
We WANT them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's
not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against.... We're after power
and we mean it .... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only
power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Well, when there aren't enough criminals one MAKES them. One
declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible
for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law
abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass
the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or
objectively interpreted--and you create a nation of law-breakers--
and then you cash in on guilt." --Ayn Rand, "Atlas Shrugged"

Heck I live in Kansas and didn't know that. I do know that Kansas has a large amount of uninsured drivers though. Have had two cars that have caused a accident and not have a bit of insurance.
Hope they don't get this kind of law here since with the cops seem to get ticket happy sometimes and this would be too great a chance to pass up.
