Hey guys, this is my first post in awhile, I thought I had this question answered some other time, but I've got a 390 don't know what year its in my 61 not orginal so... anyways it has a c6 and I'm pretty sure I want to put a stick in it, i want a sportier tranny not a truck tranny, what would be the best for getting probably a 5 speed in there? Thanks guys... any info would be awesome!
You're right FFR428, a T5 will definitely not hold up behind an FE. I think most are only rated for 300 ft.-lbs. of torque.
To clarify the Tremec TKO-500 is a 5 speed and the TKO-600 is a 6 speed. Both need a shortened input shaft or an adapter to work with a stock FE bellhousing. I think Lakewood makes a bellhousing for this combo.
P.S. I thought Richmond only made T5's and Super T10's, but I have been wrong before.

I'm putting a Tremec behind a built 390 in a 68 Mustang. Kesler Engineering in Knoxville Tn modifies the input shafts to work with the stock bellhousing. http://www.keislerauto.com/
Fortes has all the conversion parts needed. He will sell it with a shortened input shaft also. Or you can use a spacer. Also to use a cable clutch if desired. They have been setting up the Cobra guys for years with these. The link for that new Quicktime bell does not require a spacer like the Lakewoods. But Freight (Larry K) had chimed in about a ram style clutch not fitting possibly in the new QT bell. You would have to ask about that. And the 500 and 600 TKO's are both 5 speeds. The 500 handles 500 ft lbs of tq and the 600 handles 600 ft lbs. The T-56 is a 6 speed. Check out Fortes site. All the specs are there. Mike is a great guy to deal with and years of experience. Well worth the price of admission. If there are any issues he makes them right. Sorry to sound like a Fortes Ad. LOL
Just dropped in for a look - Goodness - Anyone know of a 5-speed to fit behind a 390 in a F-250 ? I have the NP435 4-spd and like it a lot, I'd like to get the same thing but with an overdrive for Hiway use. I don't want to lose the deep 1st gear ( farm use ).
I think there is a Clark 5 speed that has a low first gear, but I don't know much else about it. If you do a search in the forum for your year of truck, you'll probably find some posts about it, and I believe there are a few in here as well.
Is the tko the same size as a t5? For example, the tired old 360 in my truck wouldn't stress a t5, would the bellhousing, clutch cable etc used to swap in a tko work for a t5? Just curious, Matt.

i rember reading some where about a np435 5 speed, it was for bigger trucks.
i will look around to see if i can find the info again
The TKO is physically larger than the T5 and , I believe, uses a different bell altho the aftermarket ones might be usable with either. The 5 speed NP435 is likely the Clark HD truck trans.

As was written above, the TKO is a little bigger than a T5. They also have a different bolt pattern. A TKO with a shortened input shaft can be bolted to a stock bellhousing as long as the bellhousing does not have the early "narrow" bolt pattern.
