Like I said, I was shocked I made the 300+ yard shot of a slowly walking deer with his head down eating while I was laying down. I am glad I did it in one shot. I hate making the animal suffer. After that shot I swore I wouldn't do it again because if I had wounded him, it would have taken too long to track him down and finish the job.
As for the 750 yards being a lot longer than 600 meters, don't forget that a meter is a little over three inches longer than a yard. So 600 meters would be 1800 inches longer than 600 yards which equals an extra 50 yards.
I was never a good shot with open sights or pistols, but my mom can shoot them like crazy. My dad got my mom a S&W .357 snubbie for home protection. He had a human sillouhette target and wanted her to shoot at it from about 20 feet. She fired three quick rounds, then three more quick rounds. The first three went into the targets crotch, the last three in the head. My dad said, "I guess I will never cheat on you." She did this when she was 67.
I love the long shot. I have a Polish Nagant that shoots 7.62-54R. I love that rifle. I can shoot it better @1500 yards with the venier than most of the 30.06 that I've shouldered. I was absolutely shocked. It's just one of those guns that I'm tuned into.
This makes me want to take it out to the range / country and check my aim again.
Interesting thread. I'm into a range outing. Then after we know and are clear on safety issues, maybe a trip to the mountains.
Who has their hunter's safety cert? We all should go at least once. ;-)
1500 yards? I can't fathom that. Truely remarkable.
I did my Hunter safety when I was 14...you know, what, 10-12 years ago... I haven't hunted for a few years now, but still renew my license evry year, just because it's what I'd always done.
I'm like Karls Mom, I like iron sights, I don't have that pure steadyness to be good with a scoped gun.
Anyone know of any good outdoor ranges? Years ago, I use to go to the Skyline Range in the Bay Area with a budy of mine, real strict Range Master, the rules were posted at each station and if you didn't follow his commands, there was no second chance...he'd have you escorted out.
I took hunters safety 25 years ago on Montana. Great class. I learned a lot about the seriousness of hunting and the ethics involved. The gory movies scared the hell out of me. One lesson I remember was learning how to crawl through a barbed wire fence while hunting. I did the exercise perfectly as per gun safety, but managed to cut a thin line of skin off the back of my thigh on the barbs. I guess the cut could have been in worse places.
I am all for a range shoot. I went to an outdoor range in Martinez 8 years ago. I will check to see if it is still open.

Man, you guys are some pretty good shots. I'll go shooting with ya, but not for our truck's pink slips.
I also need a pretty big target. Maybe a tuba, or chebbie might do... LOL, You guys crack me up.
Out here, the open range is our shooting range. As long as you are far enough from where people dwell and play. Lots of open shooting. There is also a regulated shooting range down in Gardenerville by the dump. Nobody is there to regulate and such, but they do expect you to drop off a couple of bucks at the gate at the registration box. I have heard that someone from the local county govt drives up the hill to check out what is going on, but I haven't seen them yet.
Personally, I 'druther to just go out and find a spot out in the desert to shoot. It's free and you can camp out too. But for you guys that can hit the zit on the *** of a camel from ten miles, you might be better suited to shoot at a regulated shooting range. That way, you wont accidentally take out a passing hiker, or cow, or something.

"Zit on the *** of a camel"? Truthfully, the only time I ever went deer hunting, I got bored as dusk started closing in and took my one shot trying to kill a tree on the other side of the ravine. I said I used to be a good marksman. I said nothing about being a good hunter.
Re: Deer hunting...it's really about the adventure (for me anyways)...nothing like walking and hiking around in the mountains with a high powered rifle...finding a good spot, sitting and just waiting...staring at the wilderness, etc...sooo peaceful.
Funny thing is you think you found a place that no man has gone before, then you notice a bottle cap or a gum wrapper, etc...sorta brings you back to reality.
I was never concerned about filling my tag, just enjoyed the week or so we'd spend in the hills...no radio, no TV, etc.
Also, I did a search for the range I mentioned on Skyline, it Los ALtos gun Club...I'm thinking this time of year it might be a good spot, since the weather will be nicer than here in the Valley.
Chet/Clint...I'm sure I can cover ya on a weapon or two
Oh, and if Tim can make it...you bring the ammo and we'll see how well you can do with my M1.
I'm in .... set the place and time. I need to run a few rounds through mine. I'll just have to check the expiration date on my ammo, Lol ..... It's been that long.
Any Elk Hunters ????
Wouldn't mind some skeet/trap shooting either.
Livermore has a good range if it isn't windy. Target Masters for pistolaro's (sp?) in our group. However, you can't shoot magnum loads there. Also, it look like Laguna Seca has a nice range. Does anyone know if Stevens Creek Res Range still open. Was that the old Los Altos Range?
I like Tim's range .... wide open spaces and take your targets. I do that a lot in Nev and around Tahoe.
BTW - Livermore Range has a 10" Bell to ring with your rifle at 1000'.
Another BTW - Good rifle movie Quigley Down Under .... That venier is just sweet. It feel like that when you ring the bell at 1000'. He hits a water bucket at about 500' standing. He makes the guy ride out down the road with the bucket ..... Then tell him to go just a bit further. Don't forget to factor in windage. Did any of you that movie.
I'll see if I can clip it.

I think the StevensCreek Range is the Los Altos range...but the Livermore range with the 1000 foot target sounds like fun.
I used to shoot at Target Masters (you're talking about the one in Milpitas, right?) They used to let you shoot Magnums there, in fact they sold Magnum sheels too. That range was kinda dark though and as I recall, no supervision...but it's been 20 years since I shot there, maybe they changed things since then.
