I have a 1985 F-250 with a 300 that I ripped apart due to numerous problems that exsisted when I bought it. I posted 3 other threads yesterday that I have not had a response to as of yet, and need to get this truck back on the road ASAP. If anyone has the time I would appreciate the help.
I have the top cover and PTO cover off of my T18 and need to know if gaskets are required, or can I use Black High Temp RTV as the previous person did?
There should be no problem with just a cover. Anything that mounts shifter linkages or something like that probably ought to have a gasket, since the gasket takes up a certain amount space between the parts.
I have the T18 out of my 1985 F-250 and found the shifter pin at the bottom of the case. I purchased a couple of new ones prior to finding the old one though. How tight should the pin fit into the top of the case? Will the shifter guide slot keep it in place if a bit loose? I do not want to put it back toghether just to have it fall out again. Mine has a little play in it, maybe 1/32", and I thought about trying to use some JB Weld on the hole and pin prior to assembly, but I dont think that will do it. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
I am not familiar with that particular tranny. But if the pin keps falling out because the hole is worn, what you can do is take a center punch and make a pattern on the id of the hole, or right around the opening of the hole. The center punch will raise and squish out some of the metal, tightening up the tolerance.
I am replacing the oil pump on my 300/4.9 motor and was wondering if it is recommended or required to use any gasket sealant on the pump to block, or pump to pickup screen mating surfaces? If anyone knows the torque specs for either one please reply.
There is a gasket between the pump and the block. I would not use sealer on this, you don't want any in the pump or the passages. I do not see a gasket listed for the pickup screen, but when you go to the store, ask them to try to look up one to make sure.
Thanks for the reponses Franklin2. Good idea on the pin. I was not going to use sealer on the oil pump or pickup screen gaskets, I am just trying to prevent any mistakes. The RTV on the trans should be adequate, but you brought up a good point about the proper clearance or spacing a gasket would provide.
Just wanted to let everyone know that when I purchased my Melling oil pump, it came with 2 gaskets, 1 for the pump to block, and 1 for the pump to screen.
