If by return you mean the FEED tube coming from the exaust, no.
That tube may be bad, but won't effect the idle.
If the actual EGR valve that controls the amount of exaust from that tube back into the manifold has a little cinder or carbon keeping it from closing completely at idle and lower rpm's, your engine will run very poorly in that range.
It's easy to check by disconnecting the tube that enters it from beneath and stuffing a piece of rag or something in the hole where the tube connects and see if the idle is then smooth.
Some people remove the EGR (2 nuts) and just put in a temporary blocking gasket to cover the hole in the standard gasket.
