IP Timing

OK, a month or so ago I turned down my ip timing to decrease smoke and pass emissions, well like an idiot I forget to mark where it was, and the factory mark has to be way off. (it is a remaned motor) Yesterday I turned the timing up by basically just losening the nuts and it moved on its own back to about where it was. (or pretty close)
The motor rattles alot more and smokes alot more now, but the power increase is very noticable. the Oil psi and water temp are the same and it runs fine, My Question is how can I tell if it is turned up to far???
I am not new to diesels I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for 17 years now, but It has been 10+ years since I have worked with and idi and I hate to admit it but I have forget ALOT!!!

timing is too far advanced, try backing it off the width of the mark on the pump (rotating it towards the drivers side to retard). You might have to do it more than once.Mine is set about .060" advanced(88 7.3) which is 9*@2000rpm.It rattles a little but it won't wake the neighbors.I.ve found 7-8*seems to be a pretty generic setting.A pulse adapter for a timing light is a good investment if you don't have one i would suggest getting one they are worth the couple hundred they cost.

Thanks for the reply, I am probably going to drive it a few days and see how she acts, the only time I notice the rattle is when I am just cruising at speed, when getting up to speed and such it sounds normal. The smoke I am not worried about at all, It has always smoked, I bought it 6 months ago off a good friend he had it for 5 years without any issues.

Red face

be carefull if you run too much timing you'll beat the rod bearings out of it and you will be running higher exhaust temps. They make that unnatural sound for a reason,it means something isn't right i need fixed.I would get the timing right and reset the fuel setting if it smokes really black it's over fueled.

The Power Stroke rattle .....
When the timing advance is on with a cold engine you should hear it.
Once the engine is up to temp, you should not.

Yea common sense got the best of me, I just ran out and turned it down about 2 lines,
It only took 5 minutes Better safe than sorry, I am going to call in a few favors at diesel performance shops around here and see if I can get it timed right so I'll have a baseline to go by.

It sounded fine at idle, and when under power, just sounded louder when slowing down for a light and such,

All this used to be a daily thing for me, but now I feel like a newbie starting over again.

With warm temps you can usually only mess with the timing once a day.

I kept advancing mine till I had a good rattle when the cold advance was on.
But it should be gone when the cold advance kicks off.
The cold advance kicks off at 117 degrees if I remember right.

The IDI works a lot different than the big motors do....I used to work on them as well.
When I tore it down the first time I kept looking for the third push rod that runs the injector. Never did find it though.

About 8.5 degrees BTDC at 2000 RPM is a good average on a stock motor.

I am running a bit more, but my motor is "not exactly" stock.

Check out the "Using glowplugs to supertune your engine". Its a long read (getting close to 20 pages now) but well worth the time.

It boils down to the fact that by using a digital VOM connected to your glowplugs you can anlyze your timing changes to get it dead on....

you gotta adjust it with the eng off, with it running and press in the lines it's almost impossible to move. You gotta get the nuts loose if they are snug it wont move,i had to give mine a tap with the handle of a big screwdriver to get it free'd up so i could move it.Just a suggestion

Mine seems to do that too. Been thinking it needs retarded. Anyone got an idea how much it would need if you are at that stage?
