You need a new pump, and if your truck is a late 99 and up you already got a 17* pump.

John - Can you explain the benefits of the differences I've read about - 15°, 17°, 13°, etc. What difference is the angle making? Maybe I should already know this, but I don't completely understand this issue.

I have never heard of a 13* pump. I have heard of the 15(OBS and early 99 where screwed with this pump), and the 17(late 99-03), and a belive 20*(swamps HPOS).

The 15* pump will not push as much HP oil to the injectors, as i have witness myself. I switched my beloved early 99 15* pump to a new 17* pump. On the 15 * with my chip all the way cranked, the hpop had a problem getting over 1600psi and the duty cycle was high(i have the tables somewhere ill have to dig them up). With the 17* pump, i can hold 2700PSI and the duty cycle is much lower. Remember this is on AB injectors, so the 17* pump is probably overkill for them. The swamps pump will also keep the pressure higher during a foot to the floor episode.

Remember low HPOP pressure will results in less atomization, more black smoke, and in turn less power. I noticed from switching it had more power up top than before, and since i switched, i have not noticed a 1211 code since...

That is good info John. Thanx. If I am reading it right my 15* (OBS) HPOP doesn't reach 1600 psi till 90 mph and the 17* reaches it at around 21 mph.

Neal, it has to do with the condition of the pumps. None of the will put out the same pressure. You need to do some data logging to see if your pressure it dropping like mine, optimum would be 2800 psi. Normal is between 22 and 24. The better option would be to go with dual pumps, but for you to do that on your 97 you would need to switch to an electric fuel pump, unless you went with a BTS. They are expensive over 2000$ for a good system. The 17* pump is around 600 with yours as a core.

you can look at the swamps pump, but i have heard that the fittings can blow out of the pump, if that happens you may have a bad day ahead of your watching your truck burn. The site is http://www.swampsdiesel.com/.

Oh so you hadda bad day. That would be it huh? Doesn't seem worth it to me to see your truck burn. How does that happen? Oil on hot turbo and boom???

I looked into BTS...expensive. I think I will get a 17* from the junk yard or my buddy at the dealer said e would sell me one for $525.00 with exchange. Not a bad deal I don't think but still a little steep for now. Atleast till I get the injectors.

So if I understand your chart you had a 15* pump on it and got those #'s then you put the 17* on and logged those #'s as well. If that is the case then you did well. I don't know what year your truck is but I assume it is an early '99 with the 15* pump on it originally.

It seems that you started loosing psi at 60mph and it went down from there.

I may check mine to see where I stand before I take the plunge. I am looking at Stage II's will probably need 2200psi to do the job.

Thanx for the info.

OK. I used 13° just because I had remembered someone quoting a third value, and I couldn't remember what it was or which direction it went relative to the 15° and 17° values.

Anyway, thanks for the detailes. Very helpful. Let me regurgitate it back to you, then, and see if I understand correctly. The higher the degree value, the higher the hpop's potential flow output to the engine, right?

Now, when/how do you know when the existing HPOP is not doing what you're calling for it to do?
