We have a large fire burning at the SW corner of Lake Tahoe now. 220 homes have burned so far and many crucial roads have been closed. Many local roads are closed due to down power lines. The fire covers approx 2,500 acres. I am 12-15 miles west of the fire and it is raining down ash here.
It started yesterday around 2:00 pm, and it was windy. Really took off fast since the snowfall last winter was only about 25% of normal. It is very dry.
The weather is cooler today (so far,) and the winds are down at the moment.
You got the water hose out and soaking the roof?.......
You bet.
Even though the fire is miles away, the fire is in the crowns of the trees so that hot ash is carried very high and has been falling in my area all night. It appears to be cold by the time it falls but some of it is big pieces of charcoal.
It must be a big news item because I am getting calls from all over the country.
There are over eight hundred fire fighters on the job and four hundred more on the way. These folks are GREAT.
Aircraft have not been used much today because the smoke density is too great. They are actually hoping for the wind to pick up a little so they can get the water drops going.
Thanks Mike, done that. This place is really bad because we have an extra layer of govt here that fines people $10,000 for cutting down a tree without their permission. Also environmental groups that support them. Fortunately the fire departments have authority to mark trees for cutting without other permits. But we still have way too many unhealthy and overcrowded trees.
dang, that is some stuff, it seems i missed right over the whole story, i look and read today and like over 200 houses burned, how it get started?
as much as i like possesions and would love to have a house, i hope no one gets hurt or killed just trying to save an empy structure like happened a few years ago, things can be rebuilt.
