Look at the air box, if its an early 99 it will say intercooled on it. Another way is too look at the fender, but thats a crap shoot sometimes, if it has the fender powerstroke badge, then its early, if its on the door its late. Another way is look at the production date.
thanks for the reply john, do you know any other diffrences in the two. the reason i am asking is i was looking to put a wicked wheel on it and the application recommends 99.5-03. if it is a early 99 what would the production date be around?
Im not exaclty sure on the production date. If you have an e99 than you already have the WW. Just take a look at the airbox, thats a clear indication of which one you have.
Aren't the intake tubes smaller diameter on the earlies as well?? 99.5-'03s have 4" ID intake tubes (and a bigger turbo). I think the early intake tubes are 3" ID.
the best way to tell is the build date on the door post..any thing built be for 12/7/98 is an early 99..most places will ask for a build date any ways..my truck already had the 99.5 air box and it has 05 badges when i got it..it has a build date of 3/98...any one can change them with out a lot of work..most change the air box cause the early 99 didnt work so well..i just up graded my early turbo to a late 99.5 turbo..here is the differnts.
here is how you can really tell..look at the spider pipe on the right..the air funnel going to the IC gets smaller as it enters the spider..that would be the pipe trying to stand up..the driver side IC pipe plugs in there..the 99.5 pipe on left stays 3" as it enters the spider..
