but at the same time there are a lot of guys who have had good 03's and 04's, i think mine had a pretty long list of work done to it before i got it but it has been real good for me and its an 03
I would take each truck on case by cse basis. The reason I went with the Ford in the first place was the way an 03 and an 04 of my buddies performed and lasted. Those two trucks were exactly what anybody would want out of their diesels. Point is, there are good 6.0's in every model year. Do the homework and go with your feelings on the truck
As Powermoon stated, get an Oasis & Carfax report, and check to see what kind of service history the vehicle has. There were some growing pains with the 6.0L, but there is no reason to outright overlook the '03 or '04 model years.
If you are still in doubt, feel free to stop back & post your findings. There are several 6.0L techs & very knowledgeable folks lurking around here. This combined knowledge base can be a definite asset for getting some additional insight.
what year of the 6.0 should i stay clear of? what was a bad year for them? im looking at an 04 6.0 auto
Do your research! My '03 had some issues, but so do other years. I venture to guess that my truck will flat STOMP ON an "05 or '06, and in several "tests", it has... Get an OASIS report and a CarFax. I did both after I bought my truck on faith alone.
My '03 had the issues that were a problem early on (turbo, egr, rear diff seal) that were all addressed under warranty. The worst issue I had was the first flash Ford did that totally detuned the truck at about 15k. It took 3 trips to my dealer for reflash, and finally finding a tech at a different dealer who was able to reflash to satisfactory performance, but never as good as the original. The truck now has 103K and has to be one of the best on the road. As mentioned by 0zx3+1, do your research.
