coolant gulping

I have not been here for awhile, but now that I have a problem this is the place to be. My problem is the coolant reservoir going dry when pulling a heavy load. My old tent trailer was 3500 lbs loaded and there was never an issue. My new trailer is appx 8000 lbs. loaded and I cant keep fluid in the res. i live in Northern Calif and do have some hills, but i did not expext this. I have a 04 PSD 4x4 shortbed, auto trans, MBRP cat back exh, predator tuner (set on tow mode) and an Airaid intake, 2" lift and 305 tires. When I am taking a grade I can smell the antifreeze. I also run 3 guages, and nothing else is overheating. I left an RV park this morning, did an hours driving with a few grades, stopped and had to put in 3/4 gal of water back in the res to get it to the "min" reading. I had filled it up last night with antifreeze to the "min" level while still cold. Whats up ??

Thanks,

Tom

Sounds like you may have an EGR cooler leak.

The EGR cooler or Head gaskets are leaking. My bet is the Head gaskets since you are running the "Predator" and they are known problem makers on the 6.0 and like to lift heads.

You are going to need to take it to a qualified 6.0 diesel tech and let them pressure test it to see what is leaking.

Good luck

I had the same problem last year with my 04 F250 FX4. When I pulled my 36' fifth wheel I blew coolant out of the reservoir, and it made a mess. After a few trips to the dealer they replaced the head gasket and that fixed the problem. By the way, I have an edge module on mine and I was pulling in the tow mode. Of course I disconnected all that before bringing it in.

Of course!

Especially since the Edge is known to lift heads and eat transmissions.

Thanks for the help. I have not seen any smoke. I am off to the dealer tomorrow, should I expect any problems ? Of course the predator will be tuned back to stock. The truck is under warranty.

thanks
Tom

What does it mean that the Predator and Edge unit "lift heads" ? Are other tuners the same ? Does this only happen when towing ?

The Edge and Predator units are have poorly desinged programs and are hard on the 6.0 & Torqueshift. Does not matter the setting you run them on, they are known to lift head gaskets and tear up transmissions.

Also any "chip/inline fuel module" (ie Banks, Dr. P, Edge etc) are bad news for the 6.0 & Torqueshift.

If you are going to run a performance module on the 6.0 & Torqueshift, the only way to go is with the SCT XcalII with "Custom Tunes" from either Matt at LIPD or Eric at Innovative.
www.lidiesel.com
http://ophion.site5.com/~dieselta/store/

With the SCT XcalII & Custom Tunes all parameters of the Engine & Transmission can be properly addressed to handle the upgraded Hp & Torque for your specific truck, load and driving style.

Nothing else on the market comes close to the SCT XcalII with Custom Tunes and all the others have proven very destructive to the 6.0 & Torqueshift.

Do a search on the subject and you will find litterally hundreds of posts on the subject.

Stay far away from the SCT "Livewire" as it is still in beta testing and has issues.

Best thing you can do is sell your Predator and call Matt at LIPD and order an SCT XcalII with Custom Tunes. Your engine and transmission will thank you.
