I have a 2006 PSD 4x4 and wanted to purchase a either a cat-back or turbo back exhaust system. I am undecided. What are your thoughts? Does anyone have sound clips of their exhaust so I can make a decision. Please advise.
Turbo-back is the best upgrade you can do, if you are worried about state inspections and such then just do a cat back but you will net more power with a turbo-back plus a much bigger smile too lol.
I can only see an after market exhaust causing codes in the new 6.4L, if you gotta 6.0 or a 7.3 you should not see any codes. I dont know exact Hp numbers, but a complete Turbo-back system will remove all the factory bottlenecks that are in the factory exhaust and NET you better/more HP and TQ compared to a Cat-back that still leaves the factory CAT and Downpipe which tend to be very restrictive. And as far as voiding warrenty It depends on if they can prove that the aftermarket exhaust caused a part failure. Do it right the first time and get a Turbo-back.
Best HP/TQ gains just by adding an exhaust might be around 10-18 HP and 35-60 TQ I would imagine. But with Driveline friction and powerloss its not much "seat-of-the pants" feeling once it gets to the rear tires.
well i had a cat back system on my old truck my duramax. and it was on there for like a week then i sold the exhaust and out other one on. it sounded like crap. I think one of the better upgrades for diesel it banks turbo. put some stacks on it. and you'll be good ;-)
ptn714, go down a little further on the main forum page and you will find a forum for the 6.0L engine. There are many threads in there on exhaust. The most recommended brand is MBRP, and now Silverline is starting to get a pretty decent name as well. I personally have the MBRP Pro Series 304 Stainless Turbo Back kit and really like it.
You won't feel much of a performance gain by swapping out the exhaust, but you might feel a little bit of a reduction in turbo lag. Also, your EGT should be reduced quite a bit.
As far as warranty goes you will have to talk to your service department. Some of them are fine with turbo back kits, some will only let you do cat back, and others won't let you modify the exhaust at all. It is too hard for any of us to tell you what they will and won't accept.
