Question blowing smoke

2007 6.0 PSD,towed my 10000# trailer about 200 miles to a campground, the truck ran great and pulled the trailer with no problem. When I got to the campground I noticed the truck blowing gray smoke out the tailpipe. I shut the truck off and about 2 hours later started it and it was still blowing smoke but it still ran just fine, took it out on the road and got into it a little, it blew a pretty good smoke screen for about a minute and then the smoke stopped. It has not smoked at all since, towed the camper home, no problems, the truck ran good and stong even while smoking. Worked the truck pretty hard up a few long steep hills going to and from the campground, but like I said the truck performed great other than the gray smoke, anyone have any idea what it could have been? In 2 weeks I will be towing the camper on about a 9 hour drive, just want to make sure it will be alright.

Smoke is common on diesels. Only the white smoke is what you have to worry about its bad smoke. Did you refuel before you towed home? maybe you got some diesel with a little extra sulfur.

How many miles on the truck?

What mods do you have on the truck?

Could have been a bad load of fuel, or possibly a sensor acting up. May also be just because the motor is still breaking in.

Are you changing your engine oil and filter EVERY 5,000 miles and using OEM Racor oil filters?

I suspect a sticking EGR valve????

Sticking EGR throws off other sensors and also makes for "bucking & jerking".

Did you have any "bucking and jerking"... or just the smoke?

I am not a mechanic... but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!!

Thanks for the replies, I am not an expert but the egr valve and bad fuel were the first two things to pop into my head. It seems like if it was turbo seals it would still be smoking but the truck has not smoked at all since and it runs great so, I am off to South Carolina in 2 weeks and we'll see what she does. Also, I know it's overkill but I have changed the oil twice using Racor filters.

i've occasionally at higher speeds experienced the bucking, but only a couple times it did that, i thought it was going to be my injectors going but it hasn't done that for a few months and i've actually unplugged my egr anyways
