Strange smoke
This is the truck I am getting ready to buy, and I was following behind it the other day, and noticed when he was pulling hard up a hill, that the driver's side exhaust pipe would spit smoke out at random intervals. Not constant smoke, just a spit once in awhile. It wasn't so much black, more white looking. The passenger side pipe did not do this.
What is this a sign of?
Also when you get down on it hard, it sounds like a pop gun going off and it's pretty loud. I do not think I am going to be able to stand it that loud. Would this be because of the exhaust it has on it, and a couple of turbo mufflers will quiet it down, or is this popping a sign of something else wrong?
Does the engine lose any coolant?
A natural aspirated diesel engine is rather loud.
Glasspacks don't do much to make it any quieter.
The low restriction of glasspacks help the power, but the resulting noise is the price.
You will have to find a happy medium that satisfies you.
I have been reading a lot of info on here, and I think I am going to try to make a list of things to do when I get it. He doesn't do hardly any maintenance to his vehicles except change the oil. What I have down so far is;
Buy some aftermarket gauges to make sure the thermostat is working correctly(make sure the coolant is at the right temp for good combustion).
Change the coolant and put some of that anti-cavitation stuff in it.
Pull off the crankcase breather thing at the rear of the engine and clean it.
Ohm out all the glowplugs to make sure they are working good and check the wiring to the glowplugs for corrosion. He has no starting problems though.
Change the fuel filter(s). He has admitted to me he never has changed it till the other day when it would not run very well. He said it was pretty nasty.
Check the fuel system for leaks.
And now it sounds like the injectors need to be looked at and or replaced.
Check/change the tranny fluid. The c6 has been rebuilt a couple of years ago, it left him sitting in an intersection. Something happened to the torque convertor. I have heard rumors the diesels are hard on the automatics. It doesn't help that another co-worker had a tranny leak on his 89 diesel, and he found out the tranny case was cracked! I want to get a tranny cooler too if there is not one on there.
