Dealer ordered an exaust manifold after I took the service manager and master techs on a drive and showed them the noise, they said definetly exaust noise.
I glad you are finally getting a definite solution to the problem, I know the 5.4 are known for lifter noise after a while, but what you have been describing must be head pounding...
these engines do have some noise to them , but what i see at the dealership is usually the vct phaser assy. usually fail, hydralic lash adjuster colaps,or the chain tensioner bleed off and cause noise at start up. they are noisey and yes they do sound almost like a diesel.
I've been hearing alot about the cam phaser lately and I'm wondering when its decided that the "normal diesel noise" just isnt normal anymore and its decided that the cam phaser needs to be replaced? My 04 has that sound and so do most others that i've heard and I'm strongly considering taking it into ford and getting thier opinion or should i just wait until there is a problem if ever?
Well
I just paid $1500 in the end to have both cam phasers replaced
engine idles MUCH quiter now
HOWEVER, I still have an exhaust leak
Stratus. if you are under warranty, deffinetly bring it in to document.
if not, and the sound is quite loud, determine if it is an exhaust manifold gasket. Mine is. and others have had the same issue
I an not too happy that I spent the big bucks on the cam phaser fix when all along the loud noise was the manifold gasket.
