Dad has my old 98 Expy, 5.4, 225,000 miles, 2wd. Transmission only does this ocasionally and has done it pulling travel trailer and without. Will be driving along and engine will rev but truck will start slowing down. Dad says he starts playing with gas pedal and eventually it will catch and go on. It did this 4 or 5 times on 150 miles trip pulling trailer. 400 mile trip without trailer last week it didnt do it until 10 miles from home. Any ideas? Thanks, John
Sounds like the torque converter unlocking. How many rpms does it rev,and does it keep revving freely or does it seem to just rev so far and kinda hang until it stops this?
JL
Just talked to Dad on the phone. He said most of the time it will rev freely and he just lets off the gas then back on and it will go. Occasionally he said it has acted like it was dragging, or struggling to pickup rpm's. I keep trying to get him to go see if any codes can be read but no luck so far. Hope you might have some ideas, John.
The 1998 should not have a 4R100, I believe it is a E40D. Did the tranny fluid just get replaced? I recommend checking to make sure it is Mercon and not Mercon V. A lot of shops, including dealerships are blindly adding Mercon V in tranny's that specify Mercon only. I realize that a lot of bottles reflect that the Mercon V meets Mercon specifications, but Ford does not recommend using Mercon V in tranny's specifying the use of Mercon. Just a thought.

The 4R100 replaced the E40D during the 98 model year. Changeover production date was 1/5/98. He could have either. Looking at the production date and the tranny code on the door sticker is the way to find out.
Ford specifically DOES recommend Merc V for ALL previous Merc-only applications including the E4OD. Of course, they don't have to worry about warranty concerns....
I see a worn out tranny on it's last leg. You might get a few more miles out of it with some red LubeGuard or some Lucas tranny fix in a bottle, but don't bet the farm on either of them.
I have a Ford publication #01-15-7 which supercedes publication #98-8-8 and includes usage charts and cautions not to use Mercon V in vehicles that specify Mercon. Specifically Mercon only is recommended for the 4R100. Did they change their stance since 2001? I am not yet able to add attachments. The chart does reflect that the 4R100 started in 1998, so John's truck truly could have this tranny.
Good luck with the transmission on your Expy. I've always had good experience with Bob Allen as far as great customer service. They just replaced a tranny under warranty on my buddy's mom's F-150 actually.
