Receiver hitch extension

Have any of you guys towed with a receiver hitch extension? I have a 26ft Aljo travel trailer that weights about 4800 lbs. loaded. The problem is I have a tool box across the box of my F-250 and I add a 4-wheeler I cant get the tailgate shut. This puts the tailgate very close to the propane tanks. If I were to turn sharp enough the gate would hit the tanks. I heard that an extension would help but the towing capacity drops way down. I did tow it once with the tailgate off but about 40% of the tires on the 4-wheeler hang over the end of the box. If anyone has used one please let me know what they thought. Is there problems with sway? Any help would be great.
Thanks
Budman

You're kinda between a rock and a hard place; the extensions drop your towing capacity a bunch, and the tailgate is supposedly an intergral part of the rear sheet metal (causes the rear fenders to flex when down/off). Any chance of fabricating some sort of ramp so the rear of your Quad sits on the tailgate when up? Or maybe raising the bottles?

I've seen several setups with an extension going down the road. They are usually with a slide in camper and a boat or horse trailer. I can tell you this, watching the extension bow up and down, i didn't even like traveling next to them. I guess it works as several have done it, but it makes me nervous seeing some of those extensions bow that much. If the hitch is setup for the extension, like a lot beefier mount and more than just a reciever ext. then you'd be fine. I personally would look at either putting the front wheels on the tool box, or getting a cross bed mounting system and putting the 4 wheeler up there. Also, would one of those bed extender work with out the tail gate to hold the quad in there?

I've seen plenty of people just put the front wheels of the quad on the tool box. I have hauled my quad the same way you have, just make sure it's good and secure. I usually throw on a couple extra straps just in case.

Thanks for the info. I will try the front wheels on the tool box idea. Not sure how I am going to get them up there though.
