Hopefully, I can explain this so some of you "experts" can help me out. The truck will run smooth as silk when idling, steadily pulls 17in of vacuum and has correct fuel pressure. However, when trying to drive, it is extremely weak and will knock and max out when I get to 45mph. With the spout thing disconnected, I set the timing according to all my references. When I reconnect the shunt, the timing will jump and the engine will shuuder and stop. I cannot see the marks to see how far off the timing. I am thinking a sensor is trying to adjust the timing way off but I am getting a code 11. All of the vacuum lines have been tested for leaks. I bought a map sensor ($90) after testing in/output voltages according to the manual but the new one tested exactly the same. Something seems to be incorrectly adjusting the timing. Naturally, I don't want to start replacing things on a whim.
I am thinking on isolating the ignition from the computer, using a DUI type distributor, but if there is a simple fix, I would rather try that.
Thanks for the pic. Now I know where to line the marks up. The notch "south" of the pointer was confusing me. I am installing a DS2 distributor with the GM module modification anyway, but the proper timing mark will definately help!
On the upgrade note, why would the distibutor to cap adapter be so loose after the clamps are locked down? The looseness concerns me once I get her all timed in.
