HUH??

Like the title says, I really don't understand the chip thing.
I'm pretty new to the whole EFI, computer controlled motor. Most of my cars and trucks have been older 1985 and older and I would really like some information on replacing the chip for better performance. What does it do? What are my options when choosing a chip? Gas mileage, more HP, over-all performance? How easy is it to change out? I'm assuming that I can do this work myself with much trouble. Any help would be great!
Thanks
Mike

Mike: I am from the same era as you. A "wrench turning" mechanic. Well, it ain't like that any more. The ecu in your truck controls almost everything.
A performance chip will:
Advance the timing for Premium fuel
Change the timing curve for performance.
Alter the air/fuel ratio.
Raise the rev limiter, usually about 400 rpm over stock.
Remove the speed limiter.
Raise the transmission fluid pressure by 20% for firmer shifts.
Normally, expect no mileage gains on a gas engine. You might gain 1 mpg, if so, it offsets the price of premium fuel. But, remember, these are"Performance Chips", not mileage chips. If anyone can guarantee you more hp and a lot more mileage, they would be millionaires if it were true.
The installation is easy. The chip plugs into your diagnostic port. We actually add a chip, there is none there.
Thanks
Danny

If you can change your battery you can add a chip. It's that easy. I also would add that you can run regular gas without hurting the performance and there is no pinging (unlike most stock dodges). The improvement in shifting is worth the price of the chip. The extra horspower just makes me :7

Please expand on this. What do you mean by improved shifting?

PropHead: The chips will raise the fluid pressure in automatics by 20%. This is done for crisper shifts and to reduce the slippage in Ford autos. Really makes them shift nice, very little lag time between gears.
Thanks

"Installations is easy. The chip just plugs into the diagnostic port."

I thought the chips replaced the factory chips and were not "add-on" pieces. What am I missing here?
