F-250 problem???

F-250 problem???
I have a friend that owns a 2004 F-250 diesel with a turbo. He complains that every once in a while it will lose all of it's power. He said that it will start blowing black smoke and will bog down until he can't hardly move. After that happens he said that it will run great again. He would have it checked out by a mechanic but it only happens once in a while. Does any one have any ideas to what this could be?
