Idiots and thieves

Heres a good one a friend(the idiot) bought a motorcycle from me
http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p7070001hr4.jpg
That I spent endless hours building not to mention the money just to resell, well the idiot put it out for sale on a very busy state hiway(rt9) this past weekend without a lock on it.He forgot that it was out there sat night and it was still there in the morning(Lucky Right!) well someone had stopped by on sunday(fathers day) and went to the house to ask about it and his mother told them he wasn't home but gave them his cell phone # he talked to them for 10 mins about it and told them he was out fishing with his son and wouldn't be home until 6pm so the guy he was talking to backed up in his truck(they had a security camera out there) and a little kid climbed in the back and moved some stuff around and helped load the bike up and they drove away(it was a very custom ford 4x4 truck).Well my idiot friend called the guy back to tell him he would be back early and a girl answered the phone and said they don't need the motorcycle they aready have one(his!) and hangs up.They took the bike in broad daylight(3pm) as they were talking to him.The security camera got everything but the lic plate # and the police aren't helping him out much because no one was killed or anything and told him they doubt he will ever see it again WTF he has the phone # and video but they said they need a court order to find out who owns the cell phone and theres a fat chance that won't happen.

I just noticed I put this in the wrong forum(IdiotLOL) ment to put in gen Non auto can some one please move it thanks.

Cops there aren't doing their jobs. That's auto theft and a felony. If it went across state lines that's a fed offense [standard disclaimer IANAL]

Don't believe me help yourself to a police car and see how many cops come after you, "because no one was killed or anything" won't wash with them.

How big is the police deparment there? I know for us all I would do is take a report and phone it in to the auto desk. A detective would contact you from there. With a cell phone number and security footage the detective would have a place to start.

That's the theory, anyway. The fact of the matter is if the PD is understaffed priorities have to be made. Your dirt bike may not make the cut. We have a total of three hit and run detectives for the county, so you can be sure not every HnR is investigated. Are the detectives and the PD happy about that? Nope, but you work with what you got.

Stealing a car is a felony? In my neck of he woods it is a Grand Larceny. Fed Offense? I'm sure the FBI will be right on that.

glen, call the state police, and report it, and the locals lack of enthusiasm to help you, to them. that should get things rolling, and the local force on the ball, or disbanded.

Most cellphone numbers can be found on-line with their street address. Not to mention, you can pull their location records at the time of the call. This sounds like a very easy to solve crime. Especially since you can use the video to claim CHILD ABUSE.

Your camera was a witness to child abuse wasn't it? What is that word they use when someone that corrupts a child under the age 16? Hint, begins with a D. Child abuse is a felony in most states isn't it?

I would make many copies of the video and send them to TV stations with a contact number for the police station contact.

You have this thief nailed, start using the hammer!

I agree - the cops aren't doing it for you, then time to handle it yourself.

But don't do anything stupid like show up at his house with a gun.

Here a guy hit a cop and stole his car. The guards gave him a cell in where where they keep the mean black guys. He didn't shower the whole week he was in jail.

I agree... the cops would get sick of seeing me at the station in a serious hurry if it were me in your pal's shoes. A crime has been committed, and the police are supposed to be there to solve crimes. You have clues to help them solve this crime. When they won't do that, then it's time to find new cops, in my opinion. Call the state police and let them know what's going on. That should start the ball rolling. If not, as much as I hate to say it, I think going to the media is your next step. But by no stretch of the imagination should this matter just be dropped and chalked up to "experience".

Well first off this isn't my problem,I sold the bike. I have told my buddy the same thing about the cell phone and he is all ready on the ball I am willing to help him out but I am not going to take the reins for him,he has to really understand that leaving a bike like that on a busy hiway UNLOCKED! was the most idiotic thing he could have done.I never took my lock off that bike when I owned it,thieves are to quick these days.I gave the police a three page description of all the modifications I made as I built that thing from the frame up and the whole thing is custom as it used to be street legal and it was only made one year so it is sort of a rare bike to find it started life as a 1982 XL 500R so the bike is nowhere near stock anymore. The title is still in my name and was reported as so and the police have yet to even notify me or ask me any questions about it since sunday.I have recovered stolen bikes for a couple of friends and one of my own and even calling the police and telling them where the bikes were they didn't do anything but make things harder for me not the thieves so giving up on them I just got some friends together and we would go and get the bikes back on our own and once we had the bikes we would call the police and wait for them. Out of the three bikes not once was anybody arrested.I started to think I might make a good PI as alot of work went in to tracking down each bike, but you know my hart is just not in this one I think they have more then enough evidence to get these people. The only thing that really is killing me is that these thieves are going to strip and paint this thing and undo a lot of love that went in to building it.
