I believe it will make it run more efficient since diesels like it better when it is hot. Should increase puwer a little and hopefully increase mileage a little.

yes it worth it. You may not feel or notice a difference but there is one. Do it and don't look back. FYI the 94.5 and 95 MY came stock with a 203 stat! then they changed for some dumb reason!

Will it have any ill effects on the tranny temp since they share the same radiator?

It shouldn't cause any issue with tranny temp. The fluid first goes into the oil to coolant cooler then to the air to oil cooler so the few degree's difference in water temps will no be problemmatic. Its simply going from a 195 stat to 203 so really only an 8 degree difference. it not big but it will help the engine.

I think the change had to do with emissions. I think with a hotter running engine NOX increases.

The parts counter persons I have been dealing with locally are of limited intelligence in that if it doesn't appear on their computer they don't know what to do. So I am thinking I should be safe in simply requesting a new thermostat for a 1995 250PSD, even though mine is a 97. Right?

No, 96 and 97's came with a long stem thermostat. 94 and 95's have a short stem. ya cant interchange them. Their is only one place to get a 203 stat for the 96 and 97's. When I get to my home computer I'll give the link where you can buy the 203* if someone hasent beat me to it. Cant remember the site its slipped my mind.

EDIT: Found the link

Itfox is correct the 203 and 195 are physically different due to a change in the water pump casting. If you are doing a waterpump you can use the 95 pump and t-stat if you wanted to. Just make sure you can source a 203 stat for it. I know the last Napa stat I bought for my 95 (2 Years ago) was a 203
