The lights were dimming for 1 sec every 19 sec and I thought it was the voltage regulator or alternator; I replaced them both and was duped by the kragen guys to buy the 100amp model (only because the 70amp model housing was bolted up 90 degrees off). the idiots did not tell me the voltage regulator was only rated for 70 amps. So I fried the voltage regulator (I think) and had to get another one plus a new 70 amp alternator. After putting those on it seems the alternator is still constantly getting 12 volts because the charge meter gets higher almost to full as the RPM goes up and then the radio shuts off and comes back on after the engine gets back down to idle. And the battery spews acid from taking the high amps to it. I am guessing the previous owner wired it to give full 12 volts because the alternators rectifier went bad or something. I found a automotive electrician (been here 30 years) that said he'll fix it for $95. I only have a crappy chilton manual with a generic 1985 wiring diagram and after 2 seconds of looking at it I can tell the color labels are wrong. Should I just take it to this guy or is it something simple?
Well, I took it in and the relay that was clicking every 20 seconds was the glow plug relay so the guy said I need to replace the glow plug controller which I picked up for $67 which seems to be a good price. The glow plug light never came on in this truck so I believe this guy. Also my batteries are crapped out so he told me to get 2 new ones at costco.
