How can a new motor get tuned incorrectly period, as they've all been computer controlled for at least the last 10 or more years! My source for the above post was an Exxon engineering document, which failed to mention that engines can also smoke because they catch on fire as I saw one do awhile back along side the road. I now carry a fire extinguisher in the truck just in case.

All the big pulling trucks with a LOT of fuel that smoke white at idle... are lacking in fuel?

Also, when our trucks start up in real cold weather and smoke white for the first few minutes, is that from a lack of fuel, or from the fuel not being burned as the temps are too cold?

White smoke is usually unburned fuel...

I think it is unburned fuel. Am going to check the GPR. Will report back soon. Thanks for the info.

Rbaker and Strokin_it are both right, just not seeing it right now.
Kris you will find out later on in life that what you learn in school has great value, but the real education comes when you actually have to use that knowledge. There is a lot of stuff that must be learned that is simply not in the books. Engine repair is half science, half artform. It's the artform part that separates the men from the boys and that only comes with getting your hands greasy.

I also say it's fuel starvation related. And most likely too much air in the fuel from the crappy design that feeds the fuel pump.
Do the Hutch mod, install a big pre-filter on the feed side of the fuel pump and your problems will go away.

Goldenboy if it were simply a bad glow plug relay, the problem would have cleared up within 1 km in this summertime weather.
Here in Seattle, I don't even have to use the glow plugs to start the engine this time of year. (I've switched to manual control of my glow plugs and disabled the computer control of the same.)
It's all in the fuel supply.

I think it is unburned fuel by the smell. Sounds like unburned fuel could be either insufficient fuel pressure or injector problems, (not vapourizing as pumped in by the injectors) or not burning (glow plugs??) I have checked the GPR which seems OK. (10V output, clicks off after 1-2 min.)

If injector o-rings are faulty would that cause the problem? Can I drive it to the dealer for diagnosis or should I get a tow? (20Km or 13 miles)

OK I read the post about the poor fuel delivery system. What is the Hutch mod? I think it is getting rid of quick connectors between fuel pickup and fuel pump?? Do we have details available? Also, how to install a big pre filter?

I should ad that while checking the GPR this morning, I could hear the fuel pump running for quite a while. At least I think that is what it was. I now have a picture in my head of the pump trying to suck fuel which looks like beer foam. I'm not a mechanic but I sure know that pumps don't work well with air on the intake side.

Glad to have sparked a lot of discussion. Hope the animosity sorts itself out.

Once more, can I drive it 20Km (13m.) to the dealer or should I get it towed?

Well, well. I just crawled under there to listen to the fuel pump. Sure eneough, ist shounds like it is pumping fuel + air. I also found a fuel filter just upstream of the pump, an FG800A. It is not in any of the pics in my Hanes manual. I called the dealer and the parts girl said this fileter is used in gas engines. So it must have been added by a PO. I'm off to town to get a new one, and will see if that solves the problem for now. Then I will definitely look at the Hutch mod, etc.

Thanks for all the help. Will report back in a couple of hours.

I managed to change the extra fuel filter, but batteries are too low to start the truck. Guess I ran them down starting and shutting down to often, checking the GPR, etc. We'll see.
Thanks to all for all the advise.

For the thrilling conclusion of this adventure see the thread "Won't Crank" in the 7.3 discussions.

Thanks for all the help.
