I bought a can of refridgerant with the gauge built in, and I filled the system right up to the max. safe level , and it did not take much. But the AC wont cool very well. It cools better when the back controls are on max. also , but it still has a long ways to go before I would say its good. Any thoughts

You had the motor on and the A/C set to max while you added refridgerent right? You dont want to overfill it either, try to get in the middle or towards the high end of the green part of the gauge.
Look in your grille, is there a buncha leaves or bugs in on teh a/c condenser? Clean those out. Havnt looked at my ex yet, but try to find an angel you can see between the condenser and radiator, sometimes junk builds up in there too.
