I would say ya have the belt off by one tooth. Now jd would know better as I am not up on yer engine. If ya have the type of tensioner and enough room. after taking the valve cover off I push the tensioner in without pinching the belt and slip the belt one tooth around the cam gear. If ya can't do it like that than ya got to tear it down and start over. Did ya get a book for it?
I wonder, when I did my 93 I had to remove the crank sensor to get the belt off.
You didn't disturb something there as that is what tells the engine to fire and would alter timing.

Yes, I unplugged it to put on new inner timing cover that was broken. I put it back the same way through the plastic inner cover, and plugged it back in.
OK. Here is the problem. I used a crowbar on the crankshaft pulley teeth to hold back while I loosened the crank bolt. This spread the teeth a small amout on the reluctor sprocket. I did not think a few thousands of an inch would make a difference.
Well, I put a different pulley on that a friend had from a 98 ranger, and Praise the Lord, the pinging was gone. Just bought one off E-bay for $42 complete. It has been over 5 weeks of pinging, and nothing I did could stop it till the pulley change.
I put in a new gas filter, new plugs and wires, tried a new MAF sensor , 89 octane gas,
carbon cleaner for pistons, octane booster in gas, etc. The problem was the scratched teeth and a little spreading of the spaces between cogs.
The lesson learned, is do it right the first time. (haha)
