Is my Diablo Working??
How do I know if my DiabloSport chip is working properly?? I put the chip in a couple of months ago, and there was a slight improvement in acceleration, but nothing earth-shattering. I had attributed this to the fact that a 1999 Expedition is a pretty large truck and I am pretty sure Idon't have the PI heads. This makes the theoretical HP gain come out to about 23HP. OK, so I am pretty happy with the overall performance, but how do you explain this??
I let my father-in-law borrow my truck to haul a trailer about 1.5 hours away, so he had the truck for a good 3 hours on the highway. I had about a half a tank of gas, and he ran it dry before filling it back up. The strange thing is that he filled it up with 87 octane (I forgot to tell him I need 92 octane premium fuel) about a mile before he got back to my house. I cringed when I heard this, and fully expected to hop in the truck and have pinging up the wazoo. Strangly enough, there is no pinging whatsoever. None. Zero. Zip. I also don't notice a lack of power. Therefore, I have to wonder if my timing is really advanced to any significant degree.
Is this possible?? Shouldn't I have a great deal of pinging if the chip is working properly?? The temperature has been in the sixties with low humidity, so what could be my problem?? Do knock sensors work that well?? Am I running too rich?? Or does the chip not advance the timing enough??
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Ford engines have a pretty good knock sensor (though you wouldn't know it by my wife's Escort!). When pinging is detected, it retards the engine timing. If there was no noticeable difference, then for some reason the engine timing was retarded with the Diablo installed. Lower temperatures tend to allow an engine to run better. Same thing with altitude. At higher altitudes your engine can run without pinging on lower octane. Ever drive you truck by the beach on a cool morning? Mine definately runs better!
Here's how to reset your ignition timing so the Diablo can advance it as much as possible:
1. First, fill the tank up with 93 octane after running it down to empty. Try a different brand. This sometimes can make a difference (my truck runs much better with Amoco 93 than Quicktrip 93 and Racetrack 92), especially when advancing the computer. Ford's stock tuning is conservative so its less sensitive to high octane fuel but it will adapt really well to crappy gas by backing off the timing.
2. Run it for a couple of miles to burn any remaining 87 in the fuel system.
3. Disconnect the battery for 20 minutes. This will reset the computer.
4. Drive agreesively whenever possible throughout the remainder of the tank.
The ECU should then have the timing as far advanced as it can get with the Diablo.
