hey guys i got some turbo problems, that just happened last week.
i have a 05 f-250 6.0L 4x4 xl truck. the problem i am having is weird, it only happens after the truck is fully warmed up and has been running for over 25min. the problem is what i can best describe as an overboost problem. I was thinking my blades on the turbine were possibly sticking but i always run my truck hard and fast almost every day. when i start the truck and run it for the first time during the day the turbo spools up fine works like it always does boost usually goes up to about 20-21psi., i forgot to tell you guys i have the egr unplugged on my truck since january 07 and the truck has been running great ever since until this problem popped up, i thought this might be part of the problem because i could have sworn that i read someting that says if the egr was unplugged the turbo would go into low boost mode and the turbo vanes would not be fullly cycled when driving. I will describe exactly what it is doing, there is a very steep hill near my house and when i go up this hill when the truck is just warmed up (meaning engine coolent gage is in the middle 5min after first starting the truck) and running great the truck is in 2nd gear and running at 2500rpm and about 20 lbs of boost, but when i go up the same hill later in the day say a hr. later with the same load, same gear, close but not same rpm at about 2200rpm and the same outside temp 80 deg the truck will see boost psi in the area of 25-28 and the truck will not pull as well up the same hill as earlier, the truck acts like it is getting too much boost, sometimes i will see the boost gage go up to 26-28 psi and i never ever seen this high before even with the egr plugged in.
have you replaced your filters lately? if the truck is boosting even high it will run well. now if you are having a fuel restriction, or a pump issue it will show more when the truck is hot.
I just changed the oil 1 mon ago (400mi ago)
-fuel filters last june at 21000mi on truck. (i always run powerserice grey bottle)
-Air filter was changed last year in november with 22000 mi on odometer
truck has 28000 on odometer as of 6.17.07
My turbo has always boosted to 28lbs and since 3 days ago it won't go over 23lbs and has lost power. I think 28 should be a normal reading. 21 sounds really low at WOT.
the 20-22psi boost is what i got after disconnecting the egr this past jan, the truck ran great until last week, when it started this high boost problem, it acts like when it goes to the high boost 25-28 it it making the engine slower, believe me when saying the engine has more power goiing up the same hill at 20 psi rather than 25-28 psi, it just seems faster and quciker off the line with the lower boost.
i have only seen 25 psi with my truck going up a hill with the egr plugged in (at about 90% throttle), i ran the truck for 1.5 yrs with the egr plugged in and 25 psi was the max boost i always got, it wasent until i unplugged the egr it;s max boost was lowered to about 20-21psi, the truck actually ran better, was smoother running and actually got better mpg doring the time since i disconnected the egr this past jan 07. last week when this high boost started i was going up a slight grade i 3rd gear at about 40mph boost was about 20psi and all of the sudden the boost went up to 27 psi with no additional throttle input.
I think I'm going to unplug my egr as well. The same or better power with lower boost sounds good to me. And the best of all, no soot being pumped into the cylinders.
