Question cam suggestions?

I have a 1990 f150 xlt lariat 4x4, with a 302 5.0 efi engine. I was looking to change my cam and lifters to get better performance.... Im not really happy with the 185hp..lol! I dont want to change anything too much so I have to start changing other parts. But just something, that will work with my stock parts and will perform a lot better than the stock cam. any suggestions?

Comp Cams 31-255-5, get the matching valve springs. If you do a search on that cam number here you'll see it's mentioned a lot.

Probably because that cam is better for his combination. If you had more mods he might recommend that cam for you, but since he has over 50 cubes more than you and a Mass Air conversion he can get away with more cam.

Question

mmkay that would probably be it... but with the cam he recomended me, should i replace the lifters also? or can i get away with the old ones and just replace the springs? i looked on summit racing, and im not really sure what size lifters to get.

When changing cams, always replace the hydraulic lifters i swhat I've been told. Another alternative is get a HO roller cam/ lifter set from a Mustang. It's a factory part and it works with the Speed Density system.....

The reason I suggested that cam was because it is ground for the native 5.0 truck firing order, 15426378, where the Crane I'm using is ground for the HO/351 firing order. Both of these as well as the 351 version from Comp Cams, the 35-255-5, would all be good choices. The big issue with the 351/HO cams is that the standard truck efi system fires injectors in batches of 4, and although you can run a cam with the HO firing order you would have to change a few injector wires to get it to run perfectly smooth.
Always get new lifters when buying a flat tappet cam, the old lifters should not be reused. The lifters and cam lobes wear-in together and become matched pairs, changing one or the other will often result in excessive wear and or damaged parts.
The HO roller cam is a good all purpose grind, but the cams above are better, IMO. To use the HO cam you need the roller lifters, spider and dogbones, pushrods, and a steel distributor drive gear. Unless you can source all these parts from a donor motor, it gets expensive really quickly.

if he is running an e40d running mass air can be expensive. and mass air isnt necessary unless you plan to heavily mod the motor.

question though. have you installed headers, free flowing y pipe and exhaust? if not then a cam upgrade is not going to be worth it.

Completely agree here.

Completely disagree here. With all original exhaust, the '94 5.0 is a much more powerful vehicle than the '90. The primary difference in these 2 motors is the cam alone. A free flowing exhaust will provide additional gains, but it's only a mild enhancement compared to the what a decent cam will provide.
